I just hit 10,000 photos taken with my D300 -- seems impossible! Anyway, after photo DSC_9999, the automatic numbering began again at DSC_0001. I know I can go in and change the numbering scheme. Any recommendations? Anything wrong with just changing a letter and starting with "DSD_0001" or something like that?

nothing wrong withthat
how do you sort to start with >>???
i figure i've hit 70-100k pictures in the last 10 yrs & i store by date
year->month->year-mo-da
so the odd time it does wrap around it's a non issue because it's only once in awhile
just keep going 9999 -> 0001
(just passed 20000 on the D3 ;)

I changed my prefix (when I bought the D300) from DSC to 300 (to distinguish the D70 files), then when it hit 10,000 I changed it to 301_xxxx. When I hit 20,000 I will change it 302 etc. For me, this works well and has nothing to do with how I archive them on my HD.

I start a new folder each month (this month's folder is named "2009-02") and dump everything into it. I started looking around for a system that would allow me to add multiple tags, but I kind of forgot about it. The other day I was looking for a specific photo and had to look through hundreds of thumbnails!

Anyway, thanks for your response, and I'm glad you're getting good use out of your D3.

This is pretty much what I did, too.
