Hello there,
After a little shopping trip today I happened to stumble upon a 2X telephoto lens that was being sold for quite a cheap price. Now, I've been looking around for a cheap telephoto lens for my C-4000 for quite some time, so to discover it was quite exciting. The only problem is, my cameras lens adapter has a 43mm thread, whilst the tele lens thread is 37mm. I believe it is a step down ring that I need in order to be able to use the telephoto lens. My only curiosities are, is this quite a big step down in photographic terms? Is it to be expected that the images will suffer quite badly with vignetting due to the step down? And would you advise that I look out for a lens with a 43mm thread rather than the one I am eagerly thinking of buying?
Many Thanks in advance |

Question is...is your camera able to use it? There are alot of lenses out there, and alot "won't work with a digital camera." Something about the focus point, I guess. Anyway, stepping down 6mm does not seem like too much. Might want to take in your camera and hold it up there and see what kind of vignetting ya get, and see if it is worth it.

From my experience of my 2.4x telephoto lens for my A70 I really don't recommend going for a smaller lens than your lens adapter. I get a fair amount of vignetting even on my Canon 52mm telephoto (maybe 30% of the vertical axis of the frame, fully zoomed out). With a 37mm you're going to get a small circular pic in the middle of your frame, and the camera's internal zoom may only be able to get rid of it on full telephoto, or not at all.
As dacrazyrn says though, if you can go and try it against your camera in the shop you may be lucky!

With a telephoto lens you might be able to get away with it. With a wide angle you certainly would not. The only way to know for sure is to try it out on the camera - assuming you're buying from a shop and not online, that shouldn't be a problem. |

I would wait to get a 43mm lens. When you add a teleconverter such as the one you are looking at now, you aready get enough vignetting in wide angle to mid telephoto shots. A step down ring may only add to this but it depends on the camera and Teleconverter you are using. About 4 months ago before I had my f717 I had an old fd75, The ones that use floppy disks as media, and I bought a teleconverter, (Tiffen) and soon realized that you had to be at almost full telephoto to get rid of the black corners. BTW the lens thread was 37mm for my fd75. |
