I'm not sure where this post should belong.
Attention Site Council:
I know there is at some times a bit of (ahem) anymosity between members and registered users on this site. I can fully understand and really don't blame the members at all, I intend to be one in the next 30 days or so. My problem is, what do you think we are? A challenge for tackiest Christmas decorations? Come on. This is an exercise in bad taste, not photographic skill. I started participating on this site because of the oppurtunity to learn and experience photography through the eyes of others. It's been very enjoyable so far. If you were going to foist off a pseudo-challenge on nonmembers due to the holidays, why didn't you just say "Lets not have an open challenge til after the 1st of the year?" The least you could have done was to add a qualifer on the challenge, like make it a night shot, or show a family tradition of the season. Perhaps this would have been better as a 24 hour challenge. I just don't believe the registered users deserve something that seems to be a last minute decision or left over challenge. Give us something that would be a true challenge.
Thanks for allowing the rant here. It's just my 2 cents worth.

I don't think that a challenge that you don't like is because of any sort of animosity. I'm pretty sure it wasn't last mintue either. I'm sure it was just intended to be a fun, quirky challenge. It's difficult to come up with challenge suggestions that everyone likes, especially internationally. You are welcome to add your suggestions for challenges. As you are welcome to sit out the ones you do not like. :) |

Glen, I think this is supposed to be in the 'Rant' section! ;)
I actually think this challenge is going to look ghastly and won't do anyone's portfolio any favours, but I do think there is some skill in presenting a tacky subject in an appealing way. There is always room for good humourous or quirky shots.
I agree though that this should have been a 24 hour challenge. A week is too long - especially since Christmas seems like it was last month!

yup. Should be in the Rant forum.
I think it's cooky for a challenge and will generate real bad photography. I love it. |

Thanks for the input. As a matter of fact, I am sitting this one out and am looking forward to the next. I just really feel this is an ill considered, probably inapropriate chalenge for the purpose of this site. |

Ummm, perhaps the purpose of the site is to have fun with photography? Wait, no, not the "f" word. Fun?
My point -- not all of us are into building professional portfolios. If you are, don't enter this one. It is only one week. To some of us (not us site council, but us users/members), photography is a hobby. A fun hobby.
If nothing else, this challenge has helped me to fully appreciate the scores of tacky decorations that abound in my area. I haven't shot any though, for fear of residents Smith and Wesson. hahahahahahah.
Seriously, give it a chance. You might be surprised at some of the entries. Like the "garbage" challenge. Some were garbage, indeed, but others were very artistic. The subject should be tacky, not hte photography. ;-P

You said it right there. Time to learn how to make something odd, funny, and tacky worth looking at. Sounds like a very good exercise to me. And you will no doubtedly see some great shots to learn from too. Not sure about you, but, I learn best by doing. See one, do one, teach one (qoute we use in nursing for students).
