Well, I posted this on DPreview and CHDK, but I gotta tell my home-town crowd. =)
I've decrypted the 1.0.7 firmware for the 5D Mark II. This is the first step toward hacking the firmware to unlock more potential, though it's questionable whether anyone will be able to disassemble and modify the byte code.
The math/coding was pretty fascinating - it was definitely a fun problem to work on. =)

I'm a very curious 5DII owner and software developer who will be watching to see where this goes.
My curiosity isn't so much for unlocking more secrets in the 5DII firmware but more so for adapting some of the 5DII features for the Canon 50D. Both cameras use the same DIGIC 4 image processor, have the same menuing system and probably very similar firmware. I'd guess there are 5DII features in the 50D firmware that could be unlocked from and/or added via code from 5DII firmware.
My son has the 50D and it would be very cool if he could have more of the 5DII functionality in his camera, especially video. |

I am a developer myself, and got interested in firmware hacking recently.. tho I am still baby stepping.
I would be interested in Nikon specific hack efforts (I mean true firmware modifications, not simple SDK programs that control the camera remotely), if any, and will keep updating guys in this thread. |

Takes me back to the days when the big thing was getting the newest hacked 300D firmware, they `almost` turned it into a 10D, the only thing it lacked was fulltime Servo AF, it had that horrible AI thing which sometimes worked, sometimes didn't.. and ISO 3200 on the 300D was a little bit on the noisy side.
From the FAQ..
Enables Custom functions menu
Enables Flash Exposure Compensation using SET button
Enables SET button function when shooting (to change image quality or shooting parameters)
Enables Shutter release w/o CF card
Flash sync speed in Av mode
Enables RAW+JPEG rec. Enables setting the quality of embedded JPEG
Enables Mirror Lock up
Enables the ability to select the autofocus mode: AI servo, Oneshot etc.
Enables setting ISO 3200

Yep, which is just as well - there's another layer of encryption that I don't have time right now to play with. |
