I Found a camera so no need to read any futher unless you are really bored. Or interested in Gigapan

I am just about ready to order one of these so I am looking to get a decent point and shoot camera.

FAQ's at Gigapans website suggest the following for camera

1.It must be able to physically fit on the GigaPan Imager. Here is a Link to Gigapans list of compatable cameras
2.The camera must have manual mode and the ability to lock exposure, white balance and focus.
3.It should exhibit minimal vignetting.

I have a few requirements of my own.

1. must be able to operate on AA batteries and posible AC power but not required.
2. have a nice long battery life.
3. priced in the $300.00US range.

I am not too brand particular on this but would like to stay on the Nikon/Canon end of the spectrum.

If anyone thinks of other aspects to think about feel free to share.

Thanks for the link to the list -- I see my camera's not on it, so I can be less tempted. :-)

I haven't used any of the other cameras on the list, but it seems to me that the Canon G-series has been consistently popular here.

Looks like fun. I had a Vivitar 12 mp T25 that would do that job nicely. It made very good quality video clips too, until I broke the screen on it while it was in the pouch on my belt. It had shutter and aperture manual settings in the manual mode. I don't know what the pixel limit is for the software that the gadget uses. The camera was about $90 on eB.

Not trying to spark your temptation, But the list only contains the cameras models that they actually tested with, many other models will work also but were not tested. It is a matter of asking them if it will work or not. So you may or may not want to check it out.

That is SO cool!

The Canon G9/G10 are great and are able to shoot RAW, which can be useful. I guess in your situation, having to process hundreds or RAW files might not be so great - that's your call. They use Li-ion batteries, which conflicts with your requirements, but you can get a Canon AC adapter that plugs into an outlet. They're also a bit above your price range, but are about as close as you can get to an SLR in terms of features & output.

My other suggestion is the Canon Powershot A590IS. Runs on AAs, built-in IS (for when you don't have it mounted to the Gigapan), and costs $100. My girlfriend got on a few months back - it's a really nice little point & shoot. If I were going to put another P&S, it's the one I'd get.

well according to that site you can even use your dslr as long as the overall weight doesn't exceed 1400g. so with your d200 at 830g/d50 at 540g +tamron 90 f2.8 at 430g which adds up to 1260g (d200)/970g (d50) you don't need a p&s camera :)

I have thought about that an will certainly get around to trying it I have double checked the epic only supports P&S cameras the epic 100 will support smaller DLSR's.

But for starters portabiltiy is key. I am lazy and do not want to haul any extra gear with me. I am going to order the Gigapan tomorrow, I just ordered it now. :) Once it arrives I will get the camera. That way I can take the Gigapan along and make sure everything gels before I buy the cam.

Thanks for the help everyone, I decided to go with the cheaper option, Walmart had one A590 IS in stock so I grabbed it. After a few issues with the A590 vs the Gigapan. I took the A590 back to the store and shelled out the extra clams for the G10 definately a far better camera for doing large pano shots.
