Heres a fun test I did today:

I took picture of the same scene at closest settings using two lenses: The Nikkon 18-105VR and the 70-300VR.

The results (as out of the camera with auto-lighting adjustjment in NX2):

Can you tell which one is from which lens?

:-)

ETA: They are at 100% crop (one of them not quite.. but close)

Don't know much about Nikkon, but the left side is better..

By closest settings, you mean what exactly? Lenses at same focal length, I assume, and same f/stop? Anything else?

R.

ETA: image on the left shows better details by a fair amount.

At first glance, the right looks richer, but on more than a 2 second glance, the one on the left has noticeably better detail.

They both look identical to me. This is probably why I dont do well in challenges :)

Rob,

Same focal length (almost), same f-stop, and same shooting position.

The left one is from 70-300mmVR lens. I actually liked the right one better (from 18-105mmVR).. was kindaa suprprised that a cheaper lens gave better result at its max end of the range...hence this thread. But thanks to y'all... the extra bucks on 70-300 dont hurt me any more. Hah!

The right one? Goodness me, what a strange choice. To me, the left is soooo much better. Look at the detail on the long grass mid-right, check out the colour fringing around the greenery adjacent to the windows top middle and look at the way the highlights are reproduced on the pink boat.

Ok that proves I still need to learn how to look at a picture and analyze the details. Thank goodness I havent been voting in challenges lately.

Thanks:-)

I think the right one looks richer in color, but probably because the lack of water reflection has darkened it.

Assuming that the same focus point was used, however, the left one is much, much cleaner. Look at the uprights in the railings.

Like you said, Steve, I think I went for the very first glance and didnt try a second look at the details.
