I'm interested in seeing what other people with Canon Rebel XT's are using for flashes. I'm starting to think it's time to get an internal flash, but I'm not really sure on what flash to get. I would like to stay under $500 though.

Two things your flash needs (thanks to strobist)

Then get a couple of pocket wizards to go with your cheap flash.

Or be a sheep and get a 430ex or 580ex.

Don't use Nikon strobes on your Canon XT. If you end up buying Pocket Wizard remote triggers at some later date, you can also buy an adapter cord that suits the Canon strobe. I bought a 580EX (original) a few years ago and it works very well both on or off the camera (I used to use an XT with it). You can pick up used 580EX's fairly cheaply these days. I do use Nikon strobes off camera (not on the Canon bodies I have).

I don't have a rebel so I might not count :-) I think you gota pick a path... Do you want all the functions with eTTL? If yes then look at the Canon types 580/550/430/maybe even 420 (no manual controls) and there are non Canon choices. If you want off camera stuff..... Lots of cheap options since you don't care about the eTTL stuff. I would also have a serious look past PW's if you are going off camera - IMO they are expensive due to the past monopoly and unless you really need that sort of range there are better values - CyberSync or Skyports are both cheaper and reliable. There is also a new RadioPopper-Jr that MIGHT be reliable also (The eTTL versions are pretty good).

Edit: Just saying.... You CAN use Nikon strobes on a Canon body if you give up eTTL and second curtain (which is not thru the centre pin in Canon)... Works fine.

I guess I should add that i'm looking for an on the camera flash. I don't have the funding or the location for of the camera flash (that is coming soon). If i can find a good flash (that's better than my on camera flash) for less than $250 I might use that as a means for now...but otherwise I'm in the process of buying a house with a basement or room i can finish off and use as a sort of studio...so i could use the money towards buying that house, but it would be a long while before i get any lights or flashes if i go that route....talking LONG time.

Wait a while to let that over-inflated housing market drop down a bit... The 580EX is an excellent on camera flash.

From the Strobist article...I have one of the Vivitar flashes (love the thing), except I broke the hot shoe mount when my flash fell on the ground. I loved that flash. *pout* I don't have a clue if it would work with my new Canon Rebel Xsi 450D though. *shrug* Even if the hot shoe mount was in one piece.

I just picked up a Sunpak PZ42x for $150 from B&H. What few reviews I could find were positive. Seems to be a decent flash for the money, but admittedly most of my photography is outdoors/wildlife, so I don't use flash very much.

So you saying, you could save an extra $100 or $200 and put towards your house? Isn't that like trying to fill a bucket with a eye dropper?

I don't think the money you save is going to put a dent in a $300,000 house loan.

Of course, if you go the strobist route, just $80 $90 for a 285HV.
