Hi folks,

Just wondering if anybody else here wakes up earlier than one would usually need to during work days in order to be able to take some pics before going to work.

I've been trying to do it for the past couple of weeks, but the weather is really nasty :S

Care to share some experiences?

Hugo

I do it once in a while if I'm looking for specific picture. Sometime go shooting on lunch. Those are only 20-30 shoots though so I plan things like where to go ahead of time.

I haven't lately - it's still dark before I go to work. But in the summer I've been known to do that. Also have been know to skate a little early to get shots after work.

I am extremely fortunate, my commute entails a walk from near the Empire State Building to Rockefeller Center in New York City, about 15-20min. I bring my camera with me quite frequently.

The best part of the sunrise is usually just about the time I am driving to work, so I am usually a little late if I stop for pics. I think my single tree entry made me about 15 minutes late.

Well, I can't persuade myself to get up early enough before work to eat breakfast.

Not.

Not on your life!!!! My normal wake up time for work is 4:45am. If I didn't have to get up then, I wouldn't get up until around 9am.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only who does this ;) I usually go out to one of the parks in Seattle to go take pictures but I have gotten up early before work to take pictures a few times.

I shot this on my way to work one morning.

So far, it's my highest scoring and most fav'ed image.

I do photograph before work, mainly I have already planned the shot. My Silence Challenge was before work. Needed to do it then for both the light, and to get the place without beng crowded (middle of a week of 45oC (113oF or so)temps here in Melbourne, so the beaches were packed)

Camera goes with me most places. Ansel Adams was taken on the way home from work. The area between work and home often provides interesting things to photograph.

As for getting up early, I just get to work late (flexible working hours here)

Before 6 a.m. and after 6 p.m. is when I am usually out of the house with the idea of taking pictures. Well, actually, my camera is with me and I do take pictures, but I guess my intent is more for solitude and only the noise I choose to make.

I don't wake up earlier, I just end up being late.
This is my highest rated 'on the way to work' image:

I was 15 minutes late for that one.

I can't count the number of times I've gotten up at 4:00AM on my half day to go to the coast or mountains or somewhere and then return in time to get to work at 12:00.

Let's see if I can find some:

I love doing this I do it all the time, I work in NYC and the area I work in is called Soho, so in that area I have alot of brick layered streets and older buildings some with artwork or graffiti on them. Its a really nice safe area and I usually wake up early and get to work an hour early and start shooting around the area

I am able to get some cool shots with the empty streets, or I usually get to catch people walking on their way to work.

These are the latest ones I have taken....

Of my three highest rated pictures two were before work, including this one:

The other was on the way home.

Like Doc, I often get up at 4:00 or earlier to travel be at a location when the light is just getting there:

But I usually have to do wait for days off to do this. If the location is in the same direction as work I've pulled it off a few times.

Thanks for sharing!

I can be a morning person, but not a "dawn person". I can "easily" wake up at 6am, but 4am is a totally different league! :) I would like to try it, but the problem is that I donĂ¢€™t usually go to bed before 1am (or later). Anyway, your stories (and results) are pretty encouraging! :)

I take most of my pics after work. I walk one or two metro stops further than I would've and snap... I figure 90% of my shots are taken during this time.

If you can make it from 4:00:00 to 4:00:30 you can make it the rest of the morning. That's what I tell myself and it's the truth... :)

Haha thats pretty true. I had to wake up at 4 a few times for various rowing races. Since they were on the weekend I would usually run into on campus people still "out" on the town having fun. Boy did I get some strange looks.

I LOVE to get up early in the morning and shoot in the pre-dawn hours and watch the sun rise. I'm not a religious person, but I have to say that time of day is a sacred time for me. Although one time, I misread the sunrise chart (www.sunrisesunset.com) and thought the sun would come up an hour earlier before it really did and I ended up napping in my car in the pitch black waiting for the sun to show itself. ;-/
