OK, I have two photos that I'm deciding between--one photo really shows beginning or end well, but it's not quite as good as the other photo. The other photo still shows the theme, but not as strongly--but the photo is better.

Would you go with the better photo, and slightly less strong theme. Or would you go with the more emotional, but less technically good photo?

both photos are good--one is better. both fit the theme, one more strongly.

That could be a tough one.

Which one do YOU like the best?

that's the problem--I don't know. I like the technically better photo better. But the other one tells a better story.

Are you going for score or are you using other criteria to determine which one to enter?

Can you retake the one you like so it's a better photo?

Post what YOU like..

I'm curious what people vote on more--how well it fits the challenge or the quality of the picture itself.

It's only my second entry, so I'm interested in going for a high score this time around.

(and nope, can't retake it--the situation is no longer there...)

I vote for both meeting the challenge and quality of the photo. An average photo with a better connection to the challenge will rate the same as a better photo with a weaker connection to the challenge. If the connection is really weak, I may score it a bit lower but connection to the challenge is the tricky part since that is very subjective.

A better story will probably connect better with the voters.

A good read if a high score is desired...

If you like, I'll take a look at both shots and let you know which I think will score better (and why, in detail). Of course, I won't vote on your images if I see them first.

A lot depends on exactly how the one image is deficient, technically. In particular, if its major flaw is that it is noisy, then that's usually the kiss of death. Noise almost never does well in DPC.

In SOME cases, but definitely not all.

Many of the challenges are not subjective at all.

For me, if there is at least a reasonable connection to the brief (that we have all had to work around), then I'd take the quality of the image every time. Only if it seems to me as if someone has largely ignored the challenge and has thus allowed themselves to be non-constrained in ways that others have do I penalise for DNMC.

If the theme is there - go for the quality. In the end if an image does well, it will be on your front page for a while - what sort of image do you want to showcase your work after the challenge theme has come and gone?

Interesting point. Should we begin the debate now on the challenge topics that go into voting tomorrow, or wait until voting is underway? :-)

Begin - ???
End - ???

Who has the dictionary of choice available? ;-)

IMO, these two will be quite subjective.

I think I've maybe up my mind. I was definitely leaning toward the most technically sound one, but I think the other one makes more of an impact. I'm going for the more emotional one. I'm guessing that if something makes you feel, it's going to be more memorable. We'll see what happens!

thanks for your input!

Good luck :)

I made the same choice, and I think I entered what will score lower overall, but is likely to have more impact for fewer folks. (I feel so artistic now!) Good luck.

I just entered... Hopefully some of you will have a little laugh.

I wanted a shot of a fancy wedding for "end". Most people would consider it a beginning but my title would have been "the fair maiden and the handsome prince lived happily after". End and Begin -not quite as clearcut as they seem at first glance :)

Sigh.. I'm in.

I'm going to make myself write 100 times:
"I will not wait until 4 hours to deadline to start shooting."

Wow, why'd you give yourself so much time? Tough setup? :)
02/03/2009 11:10:01 PM · #22
Hehe.. I know, I was done with almost two hours to spare. Then my fiance and I debated the two selects for an hour. Thankfully Jessi stepped up and broke the tie!
