I noticed some dust when looking through lens so i decided to clean my camera.
I put the body in to cleaning mode (Olympus E-510) and set about cleaning.
Anyway I accidentally knocked a small piece of glass out of place at the top, it's held in by a metal clip that I must have nudged, anyway I have got it back in but looking through the camera there's now a smudge on the glass...the problem is that it's just so small i can't put it back without touching it!!!
it's the piece above where I have drawn.
Ugh...help please!

What you hit is the focusing screen. I'd be surprised if the E-510 supported custom focusing screens, so knocking it out of place could be a problem. However, I'm sure any professional camera cleaning service would be able to fix it.
Or, if you're feeling brave, take a very small (jeweler's size) flathead screwdriver and try to pry the focusing screen out. There should only be a small clip holding it in place above the reflex mirror, and if you can pry that clip away the focusing screen should come out (again, if it's designed to, which would kinda surprise me). Then I'd just very carefully clean it with a microfiber cloth and replace it when you're done. |

| yep, its your focusing screen. Check this website for Katz Eye screens. They sell replacement screens. You don't need that, but their installation guide for the E-510 will tell you how to remove and install the one you've got. Not that difficult to do; just make sure to protect the mirror below while you're working on removing and replacing the retainer clip for the focus screen above. |

This is all very scary lol.
I'm going to find some thin plastic gloves so I can be sure I won't get finger prints all over it.
The clip that holds it in place is relatively easy to put back in place, I didn't really have any trouble with it, but it was more the face that getting the glass to settle in-place without touching it was the problem.
LOL I can see why this would make some of you nervous.
Anyway I'm going to wait until I really have some time to sit and do it properly, I don't want any disasters. |

Bear in mind that this is just the focusing screen, so it won't affect image quality at all. You can go ahead and reinstall the scratched screen and everything will be functional while you wait for the replacement to arrive and build up the courage to try again.

Yeah it's just annoying though.
I sort of like the idea of a split screen too for macro stuff.
Annnnnnyway.
UK people, where can I have my camera properly cleaned, I'm scared to open it again haha. |

Here's the course *I'd* be steering right now: you've got a screen that's already messed up, and a relatively simple but nit-picky replacement procedure. So I'd be *practicing* with the messed-up screen, until I had the procedure nailed. Then, when my new screen comes, I'd just pop it in like the pro I've become :-)

I've ordered the replacement from eBay, a split screen, which should be interesting since I haven't used that for aaaaaaages since using an OM camera when I did A-Level photography at school a few years back.
Anyway, it was £16 inc postage, I guess that's okay??
Once I fit it, I really want to let some one clean the camera properly, I feel like I've had it exposed without a lens on for too long in my bedroom. |

I scratched the focus screen on my D40, so whenever I looked through the viewfinder I saw a long, black line there... I freaked... And later I misread some sensorcleaning things and ended up using things I should not have used on a imagesensor. Lord knows I won't stick anything in my 300 body... uh. noo... *chills*.
16£ sounds okay concidering how expensive cameraparts are. Maybe you should buy a blower and use that before you use your camera. There's probably some dust in your body now that might get stuck on your sensor once the mirror starts flipping up and down. Hold your camera so the... forgot an important English word... place you attach your lens points downwards, and gently use the blower in there. Just in case =) DON'T use your own breathe or canned air! I would do that just to be safe. |

The metal clip feels quite flimsy I don't want to mess with it any more than I have to

| Well the new screen arrived but I just can't seem to get rid of the dust from it, it's like it's attracting dust. I clean it, insert it etc, by the time I have it fitted, it's got dust all over it again. |

Maybe you could give it a charge to make it repel the dust by rubbing it with wool? Or was that Fur?
Or you could try blowing up a balloon, rubbing that on your hair, then touching the the screen to the balloon? That might charge it in the wrong direction, but it sounds pretty funny. ;-)

It's picking up static charges. There's a reason why they assemble cameras in clean rooms... It's a real problem in winter, in cold dry air. Worst case: live with the lint for now and when it gets warmer and moister try again.
If you have a humidifier, set up in your bathroom with the door shut and get the atmosphere humidified and try cleaning and assembling in there. In facet, now that I think of it, just run the shower very hot for a few minutes, that ought to do it :-)

try statically charging a nylon brush (most watercolor brushes are nylon)
I think dry creek photo has a tutorial on doing this for the sensor, but the same process would probably help ya for the mirror. |

Sorry, not dry creek, copper hill images:
//www.copperhillimages.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=1
Basically, find yourself a nylon brush, charge it by rubbing it against vellum, and it should attract any lint you get when you use it to clean your mirror.
hope that helps. |
