This is a photo I took of my wife in the few minutes while the baby is asleep and we can sit down together; she gave me a few minutes of modeling so that I can learn more about the flash. I love the catchlight in her eyes but I wonder if anyone cares to share a good resource on bounced flash photography. I have a 42" reflector set by Impact and I'm ready to get to shooting so that I can learn to take even better (more even and well-lit) portraits (you can see my old ones at PBase; see link below).

Thanks for your comments,

Kev

Hey Kevin,
you might want to take a look at the Lumiquest 80/20 bouncer. It is essentially a bounce "hood" that attaches to the flash. It lets 80% of the flash output through to bounce from the ceiling, the other 20% is reflected forward to provide straight-on illumination. I've had good luck with it. It also comes with three cards that can be inserted to bounce 100% of the light forward, in situation swhere bounce off the ceiling is not possible (too high or too dark). The cards are white, silver, and gold (warming).

Whats the guide number on the 550EX. I have an old Sunpack 511 that has a gn of 100. It still works but I havent tried it with theh 300D yet. I used to use it with a Nikon and my Mamia as a bounce. Not sure if it will still be suitable for the new Digital SLR's. Anybody ever try an older TTL flash?

B&H sez the guide number is 138 feet,or. 42 meters at 50mm, ISO 100. That's a powerful flash!

Right now I'm using and old Sunpak 544, which does not use TTL. I'm using it in manual mode, mostly bounced off the ceiling. Results are good, but it is a hassle to set up, you basically need to be psychic to get exposure right on the first shot...
I don't think the older TTL flashes play very well with the E-TTL cameras. I know I read an in-depth article on this on the web some time ago, but damned if I can find it now.
I suppose sometime this year I should look at the 550EX,

Here's a shot I took today. We went out and my wife modeled for me. I used my new Impact 42" reflector kit and the 550EX to try and light her. What do you think?

Not really what you're looking for... but this is a very good resource on Canon E-TTL flash photography:

And here's my flash test post:

How about the lighting in this one? I chose to desaturate some of the background because it was blown out to much.
