I am in the works on buying myself the Canon 5D MK II and I planning on getting the body only and purchasing either the Canon 50 mm or the canon 24-70
While there is a big price difference, I mainly interested in using those lense for portraits with the new 5D.
Which would you recommend?
I currently have an 85mm and love it, but I find myself stepping back alot during the shoots. |

| 85mm on your new full frame body will be about perfect for doing portraits, unless you want to do full body stuff. In which case I'd just go with the 50mm. |

If 85mm causes you stepping back a lot, 50mm will not help much.
Get 24-70mm to fill up your missing range :)

the 24-70 is a good choice. cheaper than the 50 1.2 and it gives you some versatility.
That amazon link says the original price of a 24-70 is $1900... where is that from? BH has them for $1190.
Also if your shooting studio w/ strobes, you will need an ND filter to be able to use the 1.2. IN my experience, my strobes sync at 1/250 and are bright so I need to cut the light down significantly w/ an ND.

| 24-70 is extremely versatile for studio shooting if by portraits you mean anything from headshots to full body to posing a couple people, etc. Great lens. |

Remember that as you go to FF, you will get about the same (slightly less)FoV with an 85 as you do today with a 50. So an 85 may not be too long any more.
Unless you *absolutely* need f/1.2, the 50/1.2 is over-priced,and the 50/1.4 will do stunning work for 1/4 the cost.
The 24-70 is also a fine lens, however for portraiture on FF you'll be using only the long end. Wide open at 70mm is probably the 24-70's weakest point; it shows some softness there on the 5D which will be accentuated with the higher pixel density of the 5DII. Stopped down even 1 stop, though, it is outstanding.
You have the 85mm, I'd recommend the 50/1.4 as a next step, with the 24-70 added later. FWIW, you can buy both the 24-70 and the 50/1.4 for the price of the 50/1.2
Edit for typo

| I love my 24-70. Abes of Maine is reliable and has the lowest prices I've found. |

The 24-70 is no doubt a nice lens but I sold it since I never used it and kept using my 50 1.4 instead since it was sharper. The 1.4 is only sharp from 2.8 and up however.
I love primes for portrait work. Maybe too sharp for some portraits but you'll get MUCH better results from softening sharp images than sharpening soft images.
In the end it's all about personal preference. |

when I bought the 24-70 and used it a bit, I gave the 50mm f 1.8 I had away as i didn't think I'd ever use it again.
Unless you need the F1.2, 1.4 or 1.8 (which ever one you are looking at) get the 24-70. |

| Depending on how much you want to spend, how about the 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8? If you want to spend more and have the room, the 200 L is reported to be a good lens. |

I had the 85mm, and after the switch to digital, I couldn't use it indoors anymore (didn't have enough room in my house to get far enough away!
I just got the 50mm 1.4 a week ago, and I love it. I don't know enough about the 24-70, but I've found that my zoom lenses are not as sharp as the primes. I agree with TrollMan I'd rather have it too sharp and soften it. When I'm doing everyday pictures, I love my zooms. but for pictures that I want the best quality, I stick with my primes! |

WOW I have a hard time believing that the "List" price on the 24-70 you have is $1900, that cant be $US or $CDN as even here it retails for just under $1400cdn...
