Well, as everyone here knows, it's ultimately the absolute Average Vote that determines rank order and ribbons, not average vote * # of votes ... and yours is higher than mine right now despite my calculated net of 1618 to your 1603. ;-) |
Very true, but if  jdannels and others come through with his 1775, unless he has an insanely higher amount of votes there's no way my average is higher.

I just hit 1775 right now about 6 hours after he did so I'm guessing I'm a bit behind. |

I had a feeling you'd be up there score wise from the get-go after you were talking about your plans for the shoot... I too went and did some snowshoeing, so I'm anxious to see where you went... |

You hate the voters, and yet this is going to be your second best score so far??? Sometimes it is better to look objectively at it and try to see what those looking at your photo who do not have any emothional attachment to it see, and thus why your score is as it is. Also asking post challenge if the comments are not giving you ideas as to why the score was low.

I just have realized over the last few months on here that I need to develop my own style. I feel like I have been trying to conform to what is acceptable on this particular site, and trying to please the almighty "voters". I've just started out and I plan to really take this seriously in the future. I have things that I want to try, and certain things I like, and I need to develop my own preferences instead of putting all my *emotions* and effort into the challenges here, only to often be disappointed and feel beat down. |
Your choice
I am here to try and get me to photograph new things, use techniques I normally would not use, and in ways I have never really tried before. Also, it gets the camera out weekly.
Before, I found myself shooting only for myself, taking the same type of shot, and getting no honest feedback from people about them, and hence nothing improved. I kept being disappointed with much that I took, with no real solutions coming in as to what i could change. Some people call it style, I found it to be error prone.
I don't photograph here for what the voters will like, but I find that from the feedback here, the photos I take for myself when on holidays are much better..............
Try not be be as emotionally involved with your photos, and photograph both for yourslef and here, and use what you learn here in the rest of your photos, as bad habits developed early are harder to overcome later |
Definitely the same for me. The structured nature of the challenges helps me be more creative, ironically by limiting my options somewhat. Makes me look at things harder and make a more concerted effort at things. Scores are definitely nice, but I've also tried some random things I never did before (and my two tanking scores are perhaps evidence of that) but I think it's important to venture outside your comfort zone sometimes. |

A bit higher than I'd expected looking at previous scores, but reached somewhere in the middle as I wanted. I'm happy with the placing for a first challenge in an area that I dabble in rather than specialise. I was a little bemused by the voting range (2 to 9) and at the quality of the entries relative to mine, in the similar placings, but that's art I suppose. I do know that I need to work differently for challenges and not be afraid to crop and sharpen. I've got into the habit of cropping as little as possible for stock purposes.
