Just in case anyone is in the market for a new tripod, I can thoroughly recommend the following:

Velbon Sherpa 600R w/ PH157Q Panhead

I recently purchased one and am blown away by it in terms of value for money. For only A$159.00 (approx US$100.00) it offers sturdy mostly-metal construction at a reasonable 2kg weight and a smooth action panhead with locking of both pan and tilt from the handle. Also, the legs splay so that it can get really low to the ground and the head can be inverted and hung underneath the tripod. I went out to take some night shots last night and the tripod was a joy to use. If only I could have afforded that 10-20mm lens at the same time as I bought the tripod I could have captured the coolest of shots... :)
