I had this error on my D200, you need to send the body and lens back to Canon, I had a hell of a time when I only sent body only back, they found no fault and decided to service my cam and scratched the sensor, the start of my switching to Canon.. I'm not suggesting you will have the same nightmare but I will suggest sending them off to Canon as a pair.. before you do however do the usual stuff, clean the contacts on body and lens, reset the camera to default factory settings, try the lens on another body if you can. My fault on the D200 turned out to be the contact board on the camera and it only affected AFs lenses the rest were fine...

Before you send them off, try cleaning off the lens contacts (little gold metal tabs on the camera and insets on the lens). Some lens cleaning fluid on a q-tip works very well. They get surprisingly dirty and sometimes will cause errors to register simply because they are not contacting well enough.

I had the same problem with the same lens. Try OdysseyF22's trick with cleaning the little contacts. If that doesn't work take the lens into the shop. On mine, there is some electronic part in the lens that had given out (after thousands of shots). It cost me around $110.00 to repair and was gone for about ten days. It's been just fine ever since.

If you take it to the shop, take the camera body with you, just in case it's something different.

Good luck.

I just noticed that i have a crack on my camera sensor..i was looking through my camera and thought it was a hair but its a crack on the pad bit below the mirror so im gathering that the sensor?...i cant notice it in any shots but maybe this could be my problem but why is it only doing this error with the one lens?...how much doesnt it cost do you know to repair the sensor or is it just worth going to buy a new camera(on the plans anyway)?

If you are seeing it through the viewfinder, it's not the sensor, but something associated with the viewfinder optics or the mirror.
Your error 99 problem being isolated to one lens, and avoidable when the lens is set a certain way is an almost sure sign that the lens is at fault, or at worst the way the lens interacts with the camera. Clean the contacts on the lens and camera, as previously suggested. If the problem does not go away, send the lens in.

Hi Shaun,

Nice to see another West Aussie on here. Stumbled across this thread and thought I'd toss in my 2 cents worth. From your description I'm not sure that you are looking at the sensor when you describe the part that you suspect might be cracked. You need to lock the mirror up to see the sensor. Can't tell you how to do that as I'm not a Canon user, but the info will be in the camera manual. Good luck with the error problem.

I also have the same issue on a Tokina 12-24mm on a Canon mount. Mine will have to go back to the Canadian Tokina service center. I had someone look at it locally and he informed me that it was the Diaghram Cable unit that needs to replaced and possibly the circut board but says more than likly just the cable. He opened it up and actually showed me how the cable bends when it zooms out to 12mm and thats why there is a Comm 99 error. Hope this helps.
