Looks pretty good. I have faith in Dell, for monitors anyway.

yea, the 19" one I have now is quite contrasty... since I am replacing it anyways, I will wait until the new one comes before I try adjusting everything...

You really should try these fixes, they take like a few seconds and are easy to return to the original state...

yea, when the new monitor comes I will carefully read through all the posts, try everything out, then start a fresh thread with some more structured questions... I also need to do a little research of my own... i'm 100% self taught... I have only been using photoshop for a couple months now... so i'm still slowly learning

Fair enough. Just note that the problem I described last will probably occur with your new Dell, as mine's a Dell also. Quick fix, just be aware :D

ok, let me try that now... but i have a mac... hmmm

It would only take you a few seconds to solve this (it's just two menu selections). First, make sure you convert the image to sRGB (Edit > Convert to Profile...), then preview for web by choosing View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB. That's it.

A couple of issues to add.. First I always convert to sRGB prior to Save For Web and Devices, secondly when saving for web and devices make sure the "ICC Profile" button is checked, other wise you have no color management happening. Secondly besides the complete differences in display quality between the monitor on your D90 and your desktop, you need to remember that if you are using "Picture Controls" while shooting, Adobe RAW will strip those away and display the RAW file the way "It" interprets it. Try shooting RAW + JPEG and view them side by side in Bridge. You will need to use Nikon Capture to retain the Picture Control settings or upgrade to CS4 or LR which has an updated version of Adobe Camera RAW which now utilizes Camera Specific Profiles (Emulates the Picture Control Settings) or use Phase One's Capture One Pro to do your RAW conversions which has the same added capabilities as the updated Adobe Camera RAW. I hope this helps..

The profile we're talking about (sRGB IEC61966-2.1)is not a monitor profile. It comes with Photoshop.
01/21/2009 11:49:53 PM · #37
actually, it was a monitor profile for me. What's the name of your monitor profile now?
01/21/2009 11:55:41 PM · #38
it's actually using sRGB IEC61966-2.1 at the moment... I will go through the steps listed by jtlee321 later this week when the monitor comes and i'm sure that will solve my problems...

there really ought to be a color profile advisor burned into the left side of the main page.

i get the feeling folks don't really want to understand how it works, but just want magic to happen.

01/21/2009 11:57:23 PM · #40
hahaha... magic? i want some of that magic!!! i swear i'll actually try and figure it out as soom as my monitor comes... honest! =P

Then you have not enabled color management in Firefox. And yes, I am using firefox with color management enabled.

why don't you try them now on the current/old monitor ?

then you'll be certain the new one will work as hoped,,, save some frustration from occuring later that could be averted by trying it now...

the magic you ask for is built into photoshop !

you just have to figure out how to use it....

i'm done - if i keep trying here - i'm going to need a new monitor to replace my soon-to-be broken one !!!!

ok... now I have an actual question... =)

i did that and it darkened the pic right up... it looked good in photoshop when I did that... BUT I want those changes to be applied Before I start editing in Camera Raw... not after I edit in camera raw...
01/22/2009 12:22:40 AM · #46
my camera was set to Adobe RGB.... should my camera be set to sRGB? does that matter?

Those aren't changes, it's merely showing you what the photo would look like in that color space (you can switch the preview to CMYK or anything else and it won't change your file at all). Just make sure you're using the right preview for your intended output (MonitorRGB) before you edit.

ok...ok... i'm kinda with you... can I put Camera Raw into Monitor RGB so I can see things properly while editing in Camera raw?

If you're shooting RAW and your usual output is for the web, then you're better off with sRGB since it will save you a step and you can always go back to the RAW file to output in other gamuts anyway. If you're shooting JPEG, you're better off in AdobeRGB and converting to sRGB since your originals would have a wider gamut (more colors).
