Not the AF-S version, the older model 300mm f4 ED IF. I'm 99% likely to be trading my IR D1 for this lens and am interested in the AF speed, though it probably won't affect my decision to trade.

it is usable /but ain't a rocket ;)
use the limit switch to prevent hunting

really haven't notice any difference in speed between it & the 80-400vr
my highest rated with that lens

OK, cool. As long as it's not heinously slow. Is it a good lens? What I've read says it's nice and sharp and not too godawful big, which seems great to me, but if you've got anything else to say about it I'd love to hear it. It seems like I'll be picking it up Thursday unless I hear some really mean stuff about it.

not super slow / but not fast ..
i'd call it sharp / it is long but 'mostly empty ' ;)
be sure you have the internal filter as it woun't focus to inifinty otherwise
easy to hand hold but use a tripod/monopod (gets kinda bouncy at 300mm)

What do you mean? Does this lens actually use drop in filters or something?

I agree with everyone else about the AF speed. It is plenty fast if you're not going from infinity to macro. The limit switch is adjustable, so you can set it where you want the limit to be, thus it will speed things up. It's a nice lens. It will work nicely with a Kenko Pro 300 1.4X teleconverter. I have the 2X Kenko Pro 300 TC, but it really cuts down the light and slows AF to a crawl. I have gotten some nice shots out of it though.
