I wish the security guards at sporting events, whom have the power of allowing a camera or not, knew what they were looking at.
I've been in contact with the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, as I'll be attending the SU basketball game Sunday.
FAQ's say, still cameras no video are ok
I specifically emailed them and said I had a Nikon D90 with at 18-200mm lens. And asked for a definative answer. My email was forwarded through many chains of command, and the final answer is the Camera is ok (hmmm...although I 'can' video)...but the lens is not. The maximum lens allowed is 6 inches (not mm measurement, but inches??) gotta wait til I get home to measure....but extended it will be more than 6"
This also happened to me at Pittsburgh...I had my 12-24mm and they wouldn't let me in because it was a 'SUPER ZOOM'.....took some kicking and screaming before a different guard came over and explained that it wasn't a zoom!
oh well, maybe I should have posted this in the whinning thread |

invest in a canon G9 or similar.
i've run into the same a couple times - even after calling and getting the OK based on me using a single non-zoom lens ( 50mm even - way under the typical 6" limit ). but got turned down at the door. oddly enough there were many in both occasions that had higher MP point and shoots -w zoom lenses - firing flashes like mad who seemed to have no trouble getting in. one even had a decent tripod for his PoS ;)
i made a stink both times - to the point of almost being totally turned away - to no avail.

My understanding of the 6-inch rule is that it has more to do with preventing photographer in the stands from knocking heads of fans in front of him/her than it does the actual reach of the lens. I have never been questioned bringing an Oly SP550 uz that zooms to 504eq, but my D80 with the 16-85 usually draws attention. |
