I wanted to see if anyone in Western PA had an interest in photographing the Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney for a local magazine. Normally I am there to cover the events for them, but I just learned that I have been approved for a credential for a little football game in Tampa that will conflict with the events that weekend :)

They will pay approximately $150 to for coverage of the events that morning. I know that's not huge bucks or anything, but I wanted to toss this out there in case anyone might have an interest in going. You would have a press pass to be in the very front of the crowd (a crowd that usually numbers in the tens of thousands), and you'd be right there with major media who come in from around the country.

It's a fun event (albeit a little on the chilly side...) and has all sorts of fun photo opportunities. It's one of those things that everyone ought to do at least once in their lifetimes, just to say they've been there :)

Anyway... if you have an interest, please drop me a PM, and I'll put you in touch with the publisher. You don't need to be the world's most incredible photographer for this job -- you just need to be competent and have decent enough equipment to do the job (a point-and-shoot isn't going to cut it)... and a bit of a free spirit to have fun in the early morning hours of February 2nd (note that this is happening early on a Monday morning). Thanks!

Tell you what - I would hate for you to miss Phil, AND, I'm a lot closer to Tampa than you are, so just transfer the pass to the "little game" to me, and then you want have to miss that cute little furry critter, and you won't have to drive that long distance and eat junk food and stuff.

Geez... if only the pass were transferable, I'd be right on top of that! :)

He may very well be, but he has his own personal jet to get him back to Punxsutawney in time for his big forecast...

This will be the first time in 25 years that I've missed a Groundhog Day, believe it or not...!

I have been approved for a credential, but unfortunately it won't be on the sidelines as I had hoped. The credential I was able to get is called "Special Reporter/TV/Photo," which gives me access to roam the stands, as well as pre- and post-game interviews, etc. So I'll be able to get some feature shots of fans, and perhaps I'll get lucky enough to get some end zone action shots. In any case, it's a dream come true to have an opportunity to be there!

Damn!

Looks like 6-7 hours of driving round trip for me.

Lemme know if you can't get anyone else and I can probably do it.

Obviously, it wouldn't be about the money........but I'm figuring I'd probably want to get near the place Sunday night since the prospect of getting up at 3:00 A.M. to ensure being there just isn't appealing.

It would be kinda cool, though......8>)

If someone photographs this, will they subsequently end up stuck in a time-loop, repeating the same series of photographs over and over and over again? Given this opportunity, will they then use this situation to help benefit the town, learn jazz piano and French... eventually confess their love to another member of the townfolk, thus breaking the time-loop and finally living happily every after? (At least in a rental property at first).

Or am I thinking of something else?

:D

Well, that would be very cool if you'd be willing to do it. Give it some thought, and let me know if you're interested! You'd really need to be up there no later than 5:00 a.m., not to scare you further :)

If I go up there and see Bill Murray, I'll just cold-cock him on the spot, wrap him up in duct tape, and throw him in the trunk 'til Tuesday.

Um...this feels like Groundhog Day...

The actual "moment" takes place at sunrise, which is something like 7:28, but you really need to be there way early. There are fireworks, music, dancers, blah blah blah, starting at 3:00! Anyone who tries to get up there any later than 5:00 has a good chance of missing the actual event at 7:30 due to the huge crowds making their way up there. I generally leave my parents' house (3 miles away) around 4:30 to be sure to get a good position in the front of the media area.

HA! Well played, sir, well played!

Just watch out for those big puddles -- I think they sneak up on you.

Hey Alan, I don't suppose you need an assistant to hold your cards during that little game? I'm really good at that. :P
