I've orderer a Lexar professional 300x 4GB CF card with a Firewire card reader, and only when I've opened the packadge that I've realized that it's firewire 800 and not 400 as my laptop has.

I've googled a bit and I've found out that there are some firewire 800 to 400 cables.

does anyone has any experience with those, conecting a firewire 800 through an 400 port?

my laptop only has a firewire 400 4 pin connector. Are the cales universal? By htis I mean, is there cables male and others female, or the cables are all the same because the laptop is always male/female, and the cable is always the opposite?

Any help would be appreciated.

This looks like the kind of cable to convert your CF card reader from Firewire 800 to Firewire 400.

I believe the standard is backward compatible, but the connectors are different. The cable should be all you need.

Just an FYI, converting it to 400 defeats the purpose of using firewire. Firewire 400- 400 Mbit/s USB 2.0- maximum speed of 480 Mbit/s
So you could return the more expensive Firewire reader and just get a USB 2.0 one.
I was looking at firewire readers myself until I realized the same problem you hit- 400 only on my laptop.
