I feel sorry for Hawkeye, basically. I won't let him bait me. I'll only observe, gently, that for anyone to equate an awareness that we have crossed a line in our journey towards a civilized, non-racist society with this with actually *being* racist is patently absurd. I willingly grant that we'll have crossed *another* line when the race of the winning candidate is no longer remarked upon, but nevertheless this is a fine step forward we have taken.

One last post to say one of the main reasons people are excited today is because Bush was such a catastrophic failure, and most people are very very happy to see him go. |

Correction, Bush was PORTRAYED as being a catastrophic failure. He had a few missteps, but still will go down in history as one of our greatest, right after Washington and Reagan. |

Bush one of the greatest? lol that puts you in with the other 22% of americans that approved of his presidency. So 78% of the nation must be ignorant? You should get yourself a seeing eye dog. |

This is an interesting non-issue. I really cannot see what what Hawkeye has done wrong besides stating the obvious. It is the way he looks at things. Bear has done the same and his point is valid as well. There will be many motivations for people to attend or not attend. This inauguration is different for reasons that are clear yet varied from the perspective of the voters. The question should be whether these extraordinary new elements are a motivating factor for someone to go stand in a crowd of 18 billion people? Are you there to watch the people or the inauguration? Two very distinct camps here and two, of many, different reasons for going or not. |

I have two quick thoughts. First, you don't need to have voted for Obama to recognize this as an amazing historical moment. I did not vote for Obama, but I am so proud of my country that we have elected him. In this day and age we have turned politics into something it never was supposed to be. Politics is essentially differences on a number of different platform issues ranging from economics, foreign policy, domestic policy, and many many other issues. Do we disagree OF COURSE we are supposed to. In fact we are supposed to be passionate about our differences. The big and sad difference is that many years ago we understood that despite our differences both parties and the individuals within them wanted the best for the country. You could fight all day long in congress and then go grab a beer together. Now disagree and you are an EVIL EVIL person incapable of conscious thought. That is simply ridiculous. I can and did vote for McCain. However, I am proud we elected Obama. In fact he is my commander in chief and I respect him as someone who clearly wants what is best for our country. I disagree with several of his plans, but I hope they do well for our country. I am saddened by the fact that we seem to have lost the concept of disagreement with respect. We have degraded into anyone who does not believe as I believe does not want what is best for the country. That is a sad sad day.
With respect to the inevitable Hawkeye fight don't feed the fire. If he does not view this as history, he can read about it in his kids and grandkids history textbooks some day. This is historic and that is all there is to it. I have never watched a presidential inauguration, but I will watch this one. I didn't even vote for the man, but I will watch with a great sense of pride of where we are and where we are going as a country. |

THAT was actually well said... and for the record, I didn't go (or feel a need) to go to Bush's two innaugurals either. Likewise, I would not go to Times Square on New Year's Eve. |

One with a sense of perspective. I sometimes wonder whether you post these comments up simply to provoke a response Hawkeye or whether you genuinely believe this stuff. Bush is more likely to go down in history as a blot on America's history. The man wasn't even elected properly in the first place, how can you call him a triumph of democracy? He was a triumph of knowing the right people and having lots of money - if that's the American dream then I suppose you're right, the man was a legend. |

I love how you think you know me. I never said it wasn't historical. It's just NO MORE historical than any other innauguration UNLESS you factor in race. |

Once you say "The man wasn't even elected properly in the first place" you invalidate yourself as a rational thinker. He clearly (and has been proven) won in 2000 and 2004. To keep beating that dead and turned to ashes horse is stupid. |

Wasn't elected properly? Come on man...get over it. Go back and look up exactly what the Court said...
I may not be exactly right and may be over simplifing it but:
I recall that Gore wanted a recount but ONLY IN COUNTIES IN FLORIDA THAT HE FELT WOULD BENEFIT HIM.
The Bush side argued that you can't just recount certian counties and wanted a total recount of the whole state of Florida.
The Court sided with the Bush idea.
Gore conceeded.
Recounts done by independant groups all confirm that no matter how the count would have been done, Bush would have won Florida.

that is why I said Could instead of will. The Secret service and FBI investigate any threat made to the president credible or not. I know simms means nothing you know it, but if someone who didn't know it read that and reported it to the FBI or SS , they would have to investigate it because it is Policy. I have read about people in other countries who made jokes about Killing GWB on the internet and had their doors kicked in because of it.

Didn`t Nazi Germany have the SS as well.. or were they something different? A group who would kick down doors in the middle of the night and arrest people who spoke their mind against the leaders?
Nah, surely they cant be the same people.
