Recently my 17-85 lens has decided to not allow the camera to shoot when the zoom is below approximately 30 mm as indicated on the barrel. As soon as the shutter is pressed error 01 comes up and cleaning contacts is supposed to fix it...but it doesn't. So as a consequence, I have been shooting with the 75-300, but it is slow in focus and not the sharpest lens available. So, as a replacement, I have been looking at the 28-300L to replace both of them in one shot and have some good glass besides. It would leave me lacking at the low/wide end, but not by much and even at f/3.5 the 28-300L is faster glass than either it would replace.
I have read all the reviews I can find and the biggest complaint seems to be the weight. This does not concern me so much. What does is the push/pull type of zoom action. Can anyone of the 48 who own this lens or anyone else who owns a push/pull type of zoom offer an opinion on this? Some of the reviewers, even the so called 'expert' reviews I have read, all touch on this and offer varying views so I thought I would ask some actual users of this type of zoom and get some 'live' feedback so to speak.
Thanks in advance for all related experiences.

I don't own a push/pull zoom, though I have tried one and I REALLY didn't like it. Small, smooth adjustments to the focal length were difficult and it just feels un-natural to me.
Those "L" superzooms are not cheap - I'd definately see if you can try before you buy...

I don't have that particular lens, but I have owned push/pull zooms in the past and I despised them. Particularly annoying was the tendency for the zoom to creep if the camera was tripod-mounted at any angle other than dead-level, but even in general the imprecision of zooming and focusing with the same ring was maddening to me. So I'd say "Stay away from it!" myself, but that's just me.

| Check the luminous landscape, I am too lazy to find the link right now, but I remember there to be a pretty decent write up of the lens there. I hope this helps. |

not got this but have the 100-400L which is a similar push pull system .... never had any issues with this at all and easily swap between twist zooms.
I would try first though as it is very heavy and make sure you are happy with the zoom |

Bear: that was one thing that worried me as well, the creeping of the barrel. However, all reviews I have read state that the tension ring on this lens worked quite well.
sjl2116: that was one site I read.
I am definitely looking to find a place I can hold it in my hands and see for myself. The local camera store has nothing even close to it. The weight is not an issue for me. I like the heavier load. |

I assume its the same tension ring as the 400, in which case you can lock the ring so it wont move at all ... I use this when carrying the camera with the lens attached |

You'll get used to the push-pull (assuming you're not one of those haters of it).
I've used this lens a couple of times and the weight is something to consider - if you're walking around with this beast you'll know it, feel it and well, i guess it's more fun that an hour at they gym.
Push pull means it's fast to zoom from one end to the other, and fine adjustments just takes some getting used to. With multi megapixel cameras you can shoot loose and crop in if needed.

This one?: //www.luminous-landscape.com/
I looked at their What's New Page and don't see anything that says they are shutting down. I guess I am missing it.
BTW, the LENS REVIEW is here.

Are you sure you don't mean radiantvista? L-L is in Antartica this month, but the site is up, and they're planning on coming back, I believe.

Well, I can say without a doubt I was coherent and lucid when I read the LL review so I don't think I was hallucinating.
As a side note: although it provided some good information, I found it to be one of the weakest reviews of the lens I read. And I read MANY reviews.

| I have the 100-400L. I don't mind the push pull, but I don't like it as much as a rotating zoom. One thing I have noticed is that I get a lot more sensor dust with the push pull. Air gets pulled into the camera with the pull. Also at 400mm, the lens is quite long. Despite these limitations, the 100-400L is one of my most used lenses. Great reach and sharpness for the price. |

Me too. I have this lens and don't like the push/pull either, but I love everything else about it. Fortunately, I don't take it out of manual very often anyhow, so I don't usually notice. Or perhaps I'm just subconsciously avoiding autofocus so I don't have to endure the creepy feeling ring. |
