Just wanted to get others comments, feedback, suggestions, etc. on this photo. It is the same photo I submitted in a challenge a while back but has all but a few blocks de-saturated.

I don't see that the effect adds anything to the shot... I just looked up the original and like it much better!

Here's the original:
I think it's an ok edit, but I'm not keen on the border.

This shot appeals to me quite a lot and I prefer it to the original. I hope to have a go at desaturation but i dont have a clue at the moment.!

Currently the colored version is more interesting. With the desaturated one you have too many blocks desaturated. Doing just one of them would give your eyes a great focus point. Like the Jimney the cricket one.
As I look at the desaturated shot, I can't help but try to rearrange the blocks in my head to form a word with them. Maybe if they were arranged in a word to spell something it may help.

I like the idea of the desaturated one, but my thoughts mirror faidoi's in respect to the above. I too am trying to see a 'hidden' message and find myself disappointed that it isn't there. Not so much that it detracts from finding the desaturated one interesting, but it seems like having it desaturated should be supporting a reason.. the most obvious -- making a specific word stand out or something similar. |

I think this effect would be really effective if you spelt something out with the colored blocks! That would put a use to the desaturation effect, otherwise it's just a cheap effect that doesn't really highlight a lot about the shot. I've learnt this the hard way cause I've used this technique like this as well, but then learnt it's best used in only the situations where it highlights the intention of the photo.
