I would love to go but can't commit. The weather (for traveling) is a big factor in January.
I traveled back from Cleveland recently during a light snow covering and counted 12 highway accidents...one fatal.

Some of my shots from the area.
Illinois Waterway Visitors Center

The trip would be well worth it. Seeing so many eagles is an amazing and memorable sight.

Not in Illinois, but here's a couple New Jersey eagles from last week * READ: NOT Philadelphia Eagles. As a Steelers fan I would take no such pictures.

Well the time is near. Anybody interested? I'm thinking about going Sunday morning early and spending the day.

Hadn't planned on it.

ETA: Oh I see where you were headed with this. I meant next Sunday morning the 18th in the previous post. The 17th and 18th are the bald eagle days.

I've been researching a little, and there is a moderately strong possibility that I will head down next weekend, probably leave Friday evening and return Sat. evening. I'm actually thinking about quad cities rather than Keokuk (much closer, probably far fewer people).

'Bout a 2 hr drive for me... Might have to check this out!

Whatcha been researching? I don't think you'll be happy with Quad cities. I've been down there and wasn't pleased at all. Spent more time driving than shooting trying to find birds. IMO Dubuque has better viewing than the QC.

My resource is here:

The counts are down some at Quad Cities, but have been quite high. I do note that Keokuk counts look quite high and reliably so. Is viewing that much better that it's worth another 100 miles of driving?

I'm so looking forward to this weekend! I hope you guys are still planning on coming!

I think that there are quite a few more spots. In Keokuk, you can go up on the old bridge, under the bridge, along the park by the dam, across the river in Hamilton, IL (they just re-opened that road this year) and Rand Park has some decent places to find the eagles. Then once in Keokuk,if you're tired of those eagles you can drive 10 minutes north to Montrose, which also has a few nice spots to get pics. Then from there you could go to Fort Madison, another 10 minutes north, which also has a really nice park on the river where you can catch some eagles.

Thanks for the link.

I would say so 1/07/2009 in Rock Island reported a total of 23 vs. Keokuk for the same day reported 272 birds. Utimately it up to you since you have the farthest to drive. I'll meet ya where ever. Burlington is closer and reports more than Keokuk.

ETA: I do agree with you about the crowd.

I'm cool with the additional distance... I agree that Burlington potentially looks very good, and it is pretty close to Keokuk, looks like 30-35 miles or so.
Let's look at the January 14 counts and play our cards from there.

Yipee I just found out today I'll be losing my job. Friday will be my last day at work as I'm being laid off. I've never been laid off before. This will be a new experience. Anyway, I doubt I will be making the trip to Keokuk. Have a great time and post some shots.

Thats a bummer Dave. Quad Graphics by chance? I seen on the news tonight that they announced layoffs today.

Naa. Haven't heard of them before. Definately a bummer but whatta ya do? No jobs around here. Guess I'll just mooch off the government for awhile. I've earned it.

Damn, Dave, that is crappy news to start the New Year. I feel your pain, having been in that situation twice this decade. Sorry you won't be able to get over to Keokuk this weekend.

I'm planning on motoring down on Friday evening for an early AM start on Saturday... my destination for Sat. AM will be either Burlington, IA or Keokuk, depending on the eagle counts; I think the counts for the 14th should be posted by Thursday, so I'll post back then. Who else is planning on being down there?
01/13/2009 02:23:49 PM · #46
I'm definitely going to be around!! Let me know where you're going to be and I'll meet up with you. If you don't want to go to Keokuk, that's ok with me, the "show" goes on all weekend and I can catch the indoor bird show on Sunday if you don't want to go to Keokuk.
eta: Sorry to hear about the job!

Its still up in the wind for me. Part of me says hop to it. Another part says too far to drive. I am still mulling it over and will make a decision soon. Have you heard from Ed at all? I haven't seen him on DPC for awhile.

Fritz if you still intend on going to Burlington, I have some directions for you. I talked to a lady from the visitors center today and she says go to Lock and Dam 18 on the Illinois side. Take Hwy. 34 thru Burlington and cross the river. About 6 miles there should signs and a road to the right going to the lock and dam. Turn there and go for about 4 miles. I'm thinking I still might show up at the dam tommorrow morning sometime before 11am. I'm gonna try and leave by 8am.

Due to the weather and a bit of winter laziness I am going to stay home this weekend. I got my eagle shot for the week and didn't even have to leave my yard.

If you're going thru Burlington, to Illinois, the road is on the left! If you're going towards Burlington and you're already in Illinois, then it would be on your right. If you guys are going to go you can PM me and I'll give you my phone number in case you get lost. Or we can meet at the Port and all go together.
