Friends of mine are renting out their house and weren't happy with the shots the agent snapped of the house so asked if I could take some. Happy too, never done it before but I couldn't do worse the the agent (I hoped) :)
The house had been cleaned out and I was armed with a Nikon D90, SB-600 flash, light stand and an 18-105 VR lens. Mostly I aimed the flash into the roof corners to try and fill the room where I could and tried to get an angle to get the main features of the room. Not as easy as I thought, there is never a place to stand to get the shot without removing a wall :). Angles and perspective I found the trickiest and wasn't really hapy with some, and I didn't correct for barrel distortion at 18mm either. I had fun taking these, and hint ideas or comments how I could could have done better would be welcome.
Anyway my shots (the ones they chose) are here ForRent.
And some notes on the shots I found interesting:
Bit of blow out from the flash hidden in the corner on this one, but it gave the best overall light without the flash being in the mirror
You can see where the flash was around the corner from the light on the ceiling in this one, but it bought the floors up well (on camera fill for the foreground. I was impressed the the SB-600 around the corner 15-20 feet away still talked to the camera.
And this outside shot I used the SB-600 to fill the dark shadow of the cubby house under the tree (you can see the flash unit on the ground infront of the cubby house ), again was impressed in the comunication with SB-600 at 15-20 feet in bright sunlight.

Well done Tony. Looks like a lovely house, and it will surely benefit the owners having such great shots for people to look at. I think it makes a big difference. The only issue I could see was with the smaller rooms. 18mm must not be wide enough with the DX sensor, but really not sure what you could have done about it.
Isn't Nikon's CLS awesome?! |

Thanks Lonni,
My main problem with the small rooms is I was limited in angle having to shooting through doorways. I suppose the Tokina 12-24 I've been coveting would have been perfect :)
Must say I was very impressed with the Nikon CLS and this little project gave it a good workout, even when it beeped that it couldn't provide enough light it had done a pretty good job. A second flash would have been handy in the bigger spaces. I think at the moment a second flash will be a SB-24/25/26 and use cheap ebay triggers, no TTL but it sounds fun.

Bloody Nikon lovers.
Oh, my Nikon is so wonderful. Oh look at how great the wireless off camera flash works.
Give me a break.
And no... this is not me being bitter and twisted about the fact that I'd need two expensive Speedlight flashes to get the same functionality... not at all... okay, maybe a little bit. ;)
Excellent shots. Was asked to take photos of my sisters place, but it looks like I might not have to now... would have loved to given it a go, though, would have struggled to take anything half decent with only the on-camera flash. :( |

Hee Hee! But it is wonderful Vlado! :)
I have the SB-600, and I really need another flash unit, so I'm actually considering going Tony's way of buying an SB-2something on ebay plus some wireless triggers. CLS is great, but another 800 is out of my price range, so I guess I'm not really that much better off that Canon users in this case...
Hey, you guys pumped for Olympics 4? |

Bring on the next DPCO I say. Hope to see you guys in the Aussie team again.
Good luck finding a SB-something Lonni, I've just missed out on 2 on e-bay, kicking myself as I only missed by $10:) |

I think you've done a great job ... especially for only having one flash to work with ... the only shot that kinda bugs me is #2 ... I want to see more of the floor and walls while still being able to see the gorgeous ceiling details ... maybe turning the camera to portrait orientation would have helped? I'll be putting my house on the market in the next few months and will do all of my own photography as well ... I've also got an old house with small rooms, so it's gonna be a challenge! |

Thanks Pam.
I too didn't like #2 much, I preferred this one, but the owners thought the other one made the room look bigger, so thats the one they got.
Good luck selling your place, and have fun taking the shots. I found one flash enough for the smaller rooms, but shots like the kitchen where there were lots of shadows being cast no matter where the flash was, and the big areas, could have done with a second off-camera flash.
