Hi All,
Can anyone tell me if I should expect massive photo quality improvement if I upgrade my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 ?
cheers

Where do you feel the f1.8 falls short of what you want? |

| I bet you will see a big difference with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM. |

thanks....
yeah I understand your question. This all comes from a convo I had with a guy who said my 1.8 is a great but I would get better quality with the 1.4 as it has better glass?

| I think you may notice a difference. Though, it may not be substantial enough to justify spending the money on simply upgrading to the 1.4. The 1.8 is extremely cheap and, in my opinion, quite sharp for the price. Now, if you are willing to shell out the dough for the 1.2L then I think the difference will be more significant, and of course, the build quality is significantly better. |

Hope this aint too stupid a question. but for studio work (where I use the 1.8) what if I swapped it for a 24-70 and used it at 50 ?
would that be good or should I stick with a prime? |

Here is a very informative article. It goes into comparisons with the 24-70 but I am looking for a specifice study of all three canon 50mm for you.

This site allows you to look at picture taken with any canon lens

I asked because, not too long ago, I upgraded my 50mm f1.8 to the 50mm f1.4.
Why?
Better bokeh.
Faster (somewhat) and quieter focusing.
Build quality.
In my experience, that's pretty much what the switch will get you. |

The point of a fast lens is so you can use it wide open. The 1.8 has bad CA and isn't sharp wide open (all lenses are sharper stopped down of course) and it could have better bokeh and it's slow to focus (compared to a USM lens.)
Will this make a difference to you? Depends on your style of photography. If you shoot (or want to) wide open alot, into the light/ backlit shots, action shots then the 1.4 will be more successful at giving you what you want.
If you shoot indoors, F8, static subjects then you may not benifit much from the better lens.
It's not that the 1.8 is a bad lens. It's a $70 lens. You get what you pay for. |

the 1.4 has smoother looking bokeh and since is has USM it actually focusses when you want it to, not when it wakes up. I think the focussing speed is worth the price difference alone.
Of course, if that's not an issue then i wouldn't worry too much. The 1.8 is a great great great lens for the money in terms of optical quality. |

| Most of the shots in my port were taken with the 1.4. I love it :) |
