I have a very small surface mark near the edge of the front element on my canon 24-105mm f/4 L that doesn't affect the pictures, but I'd like it gone never-the-less. Has anyone else had experience with having small abrasions removed from your glass? If it has to be replaced any idea what that might cost?

A tiny mark near the periphery of the front element will have zero effect on your images. Attempting to remove it will probably make the situation worse, actually. I'd try not to obsess about it if I were you, back in the day MOST of my daily lenses were a little marked up after a few years of work.

I am not an expert.

The camera department, I.A.T.S.E. Local 600, has told me that if anything, dust, marks, and the like except things that will blur will just contribute to the contrast of the image as long as the "garbage" is on the front element.

IF it was on the rear element, then, getting the lens cleaned by a professional would be recommended. The rear element is more crucial being close to the sensor/film plane than the front element.

Yup best thing you can do is leave it alone. It won't harm your pictures. The saying "If it aint broke don't fix it." comes to mind.
