I need a tripod and am kinda tight on money. Best Buy has said tripod with the 390RC2BB (mouthful) 3 way head for $140, and I've got a $50 giftcard there. Is that an OK tripod? It'll have to support a D300 + grip, but none of my lenses weigh a ton.

Not sure if I like the locking mechanism for the legs.

What do you mean? Like, the screw locks instead of latches to hold the legs in place when you extend them?

I just got the 190XPROB and I'm really pleased with it, albeit I got the 484RC2 ball socket head. Great build quality and sturdy. Fast to deploy too.

The screw locks seem like they may take awhile to lock and unlock. If the screw locks come out all the way, I would avoid them as the chance of losing them increases.

I don't know if they do, but I don't mind having to unscrew the locks in order to extend the legs.

Don't forget to purchase a quick release plate too if you plan to use it for more than one body or to use it with a lens with a collar. You'll need the 200PL-38 if you go with that head.
What sort of photography are you interested in doing with it?
Think about that before you decide to go with a 3-way head, because they can be very good at inducing headaches, depending on what your application is.

Probably mostly just nightscapes, maybe a tiny bit of studio portrait work as well.

I'm pretty used to 3 way heads... I'd love to have a ballhead at some point but it's a little out of the budget now.
