okay so here's the dilemma...
currently I feel I am in need of:
a) my own laptop (right now im sharing the family computer w/ six siblings AND clogging up all the memory with my pictures!)
b) some basic lighting equipment//backdrop to get started learning studio lighting and all that fun stuff!
c)a new camera body, something a little bigger and heavier.
I will have $1,500 saved by the end of the month, + whatever birthday money i get! :]
what are your recommendations?? |

You can get a used 30D for a little under $500 and then you have $1000 for some pretty rockin' glass. That's what I'd do though. Oh, and you can get a decent laptop for around 500-600 to do your basic stuff.

a) my own laptop (right now im sharing the family computer w/ six siblings AND clogging up all the memory with my pictures!)
Suggestion: get an external hard drive with 1 terrabyte or something - much cheaper than a new laptop
b) some basic lighting equipment//backdrop to get started learning studio lighting and all that fun stuff!
Suggestion: start with a few slave flashes - cheaper and helps you ease into real studio lighting.
c)a new camera body, something a little bigger and heavier.
Suggestion: none. but what does weight and size of the camera body has got to do with your photography?
I will have $1,500 saved by the end of the month, + whatever birthday money i get! :]
Suggestion: you can give some to me. (puts on mascara and flutter eye lashes) |

| In order of priority I put the laptop first - sharing just isn't an option!! |

Yeah, personally, I don't think I could survive sharing a computer, especially with six other people! That must get frustrating... and if they're anything like my siblings, I'm sure they clogged it up with strange software and tons of viruses (or maybe that's just my sister).
Anywho, I'd say go for a laptop! For a list of some great laptops I'd check out this site:

Don't bother with a new camera. Spend it on some glass.
You can also checkout Strobist for his explanation on is Lighting 101 series. He goes into what you need to buy for off camera flash. Invest in some pocket wizards and some flashes/stands/umbrellas.
You could get some lighting and a laptop. |

instead of (or in addtion to) a new camera body, you could go for this or this, or this battery grip to add on to your current 400d
I really love the grip I got for my camera--more battery capacity, option to use AAs, but mostly it makes the camera fit my hand better, and portrait/vertical use is so much nicer.
I also love this hand strap--different mounting plates are available that may already fit your tripod/head.

you can get a very acceptable Dell for under $600. look into the Inspiron 15 model.
definitely sounds like you need your own machine. |
