I am learning that my camera flash is my worst enemy . . . what external flashes would you suggest for a Canon user? |

The reason the internal flash is tough to work with is because it shoots straight on which leaves harsh shadows, kind of a glary look. It's really just harsh.
The trick, from what I understand is to diffuse the light, or scatter the light to get even lighting. *still working on this one myself*

I've got a 430ex and love it. It does wonders for indoor photography. If you don't want to spend $220 you could try looking for a used 420ex on ebay or craigslist. It'll probably go for a little over a hundred. Sigma also makes flashes for canon. |

I rented a 580ex II for the weekend, along with an off-camera hotshoe adapter, and LOVED the results I got (after a bit of learning). I used it for bouncing off the wall/ceiling indoors, but where I really appreciated it was actually as an outdoor fill light while I was shooting in mid-day sun. The 580ex is out of my price range, and since I'm not planning to need the master/slave capabilities (yet), I'm planning to get the 430ex II. It's around $240 on Amazon. Keep in mind that many of the hotshoe adapters and triggers can be quite expensive (some as expensive as the flash itself) so you'll want to do some research about corded and wireless triggering options. |
