Got my E-1 last friday. Noticed that it wasn't listed in the dpchallenge database, so I assume that I am the first.
My first SLR in 20 years, I do belive it was time to upgrade. :)
Still learning, jumping from 1.3MP to 5MP is quite a difference.

How is the E-1? I'm a big olympus guy myself and am gonna look into buying a DSLR from them in the next year or two. Is it lookin good? Are they gonna have a good line? How are those new Zuiko lenses? I used to use the old ones for regular SLR's before and they were superb!

To be honest I don't think that you need an E1 to be able to pass judgement on it. It is a first-generation digital camera, and whilst Olympus lenses are absolutely top-notch (whether they are Zuiko or not) the camera has not matured yet. Also if you look at the sensor it is two years out of date already, which is not what I would expect from a brand new camera. The E1 has moire issues, and also has problems with noise.
Considering that Olympus spent a couple of years developing this camera, and Kodak had more than two years to sort out the sensor I really would have expected more.
Also the Olympus firmware that is used is not very Good, both the JPEG and raw formats have significant issues. If you don't understand what I mean them simply try converting a raw file in Photoshop CS and in the Olympus file viewer or studio utilities. Whilst Photoshop does not actually support the E1 it makes a heck of a better job except in very fine detail of converting the image, it also produces no moire whereas the Olympus packages do. I find this very disappointing and can only hope that future cameras are a lot better -- as it was these reasons that led to be buying a 10D.
Also there is another Olympus camera launching around February which will have image stabilisation in the camera from what I am told, and as it will be aimed at the semiprofessional market it will be cheaper than most other digital cameras of the SLR type. Some point in this next year Olympus have also got a budget SLR launching, which due to the small sensor size could be the cheapest SLR for quite a while.
The E1 is competent rather than groundbreaking, and as it is aimed at the professional market should be compared with the D1X and not with what is being compared to at the moment. |
