After much consideration (and hollow self-justifications) I've just ordered an Eos 5D MK II with the kit 24-105 lens (it should come tomorrow). As I reflect on this moment of indulgence, I don't know whether my current modest 5.2857 in the 'Sand' challenge is proof I need better kit, or proof that I really shouldn't have wasted my money!

Oh well, at least I won't have an excuse anymore - mind you, give it few weeks and I'm sure that I'll be cursing my lack of a large collection of good prime lenses!

Seriously though, over the years I have found that those electronic products I buy right at the front of the adoption curve (as long as they are high end) tend to be those things that last the longest and in end offer good value.

I have been using an Olympus E410 with a 35mm Macro and an 18-180 Zoom up until now - a good starter camera, but since joining this site and finding that I need to shoot to theme and deadline, often in less than the best light (yesterday was really dark here); I'm hoping the 5D will give me some extra flexibility. The E410 will be going my wife's way; she has recently suggested she'd like to join DPC - I think she thinks she'll see more of me!

If any other new 5D MK II owners would be willing to pass on any tips on starter settings (especially their preferred ISO setting), then please post a reply.

Many thanks

Paul

Congrats. We might be getting one at work to replace our 5D.

Be sure to also stock up on more hard drive space!

Indeed, I've got 3.75TB on and connected to my Mac Pro at the moment for video work and backup but I'll be sticking in another 1TB internal drive to accommodate the humungous 5D files.

I did some testing with a friends' 5D2 and I feel ISO3200 is useable like 800 is on more, um, normal cameras. 6400 can be used as well, but there will be some noise there. The 12,800 and 25,600 are nice marketing hype but I don't think you'd ever really use these settings.

I'm trying to hold off till late march to get my 5D2. I'll be a PPA school and can work a discount/deal and cash and carry type thing as well. But I have to keep telling myself that patience is a virtue.

As for the HD space mentioned, get a 1TB drive TODAY, and several fast 8Gb cards. On the one I tested a 21mp RAW file is HUGE. It showed that 45 or so would fit on a 2Gb card. I'm used to 140 on such a card (40D raw files). Ouch!

Thanks for the info; I was out shooting yesterday and needed to use ISO 1600 on my E410 to have any hope of getting any sharpness with my animal subjects - the result was not very pretty. It sounds like the 5D may be just the job in such situations.

They are still working on the firmware to change the phrases "Delete all Images?" and "Format Card" to "Eh you sure about that?"

That's alright. Let everybody else suffer through software compatability problems and updates. By April you should be able to own one problem free. And they might even be a few bucks cheaper.

For best quality, I still stick to ISO 100-400 (I seldom leave ISO 100 if I'm in control of the light, for example). But I've been shooting a LOT of candids at ISO 6400. I think it's really quite usable.

Congrats on the purchase. You'll love it. :)
