| I did have one el-cheapo power supply go bad in a 750Mhz Duron box I built around '02. I don't recall the symptoms, but they did NOT scream "failed power supply" to me. It powered up, but would not boot due to a missing the 5 volts DC. I only thought to check it's voltages based on experience. Faulty and cheap power supplies can cause all sorts of weird problems that you would not attribute to the P/S. I picked up a simple power supply tester at Fry's the other day for about $7. You just plug it into the leads and it tells you if all the voltages are present. |

Well yes, but I'd rather have a decent quality, stable 350W PSU than a cheap but flakey 400W one. The emachines problem isn't simply one of insufficient power, but rather dirty power when the PSU is under load.
I'm not saying PSUs aren't important - just that if you're building a machine with a low-end VGA card and no unusual power demands, you don't need to go crazy on getting a high end PSU. |
