I have been noticing how many registered users there are on DPC who are non-participants. These people intrigue me. They look at the images we post, and they sometimes vote and sometimes don't. They take the time out to leave comments, and yet they just don't submit for challenges. A very special, quiet, reflective group of people. Just a nod to them and an acknowledging of their input and role on this site.

Could just be timid lurkers, waiting to gather the courage. I think everybody lurks for a bit. I lurked for at least a month before I even got an account.

I'm a registered user (though I was a paying member for a few years).
If, by "participate", you mean enter challenges, I don't participate.
Though I would say that viewing and commenting images IS participation.
I read the forum and post now and then too.
I used to be far more active on the site several years ago, including being part of the original Critique Club, though still didn't enter challenges much. But these days I don't spend as much time here.
Not entering challenges isn't always about courage, it certainly isn't for me.
I simply have no interest in entering them.
I don't enjoy shooting to challenges (or themes in general) - my mind doesn't work that way.
But I do enjoy looking at good photography, looking at how others have interpreted a challenge or theme and even commenting.

I didn't mean to imply that those who don't enter challenges lack courage, and that was bad wording on my behalf. I think that sometimes a giant (and close) community such as this can be difficult to break into at times, and can appear to be a daunting task.
Out of curiosity, Kavey, I understand not wanting your creative direction supplied by a challenge category, but what about Free Study?
FWIW, I definitely agree with you that viewing and commenting on images is participation, as is taking part in the forums.

In order to buy prints on DPCPrints you need an account there. The account there is linked to an account here so there may be many people who have DPCPrints accounts but don't realize that they also have a DPC account and may not even be interested anyway.

Just shows that there is a lot more to this place than getting beat up in challenges.

Most would be the general turnover of a sites registration - a lot of people register briefly and never go back to the site - I no doubt have oodles of dead registrations over the web from the dark past.

I wish DPC would scratch the dead ones (no activity or logins e.t.c. over a long period of time).... Then I could change to the ID that has been taken and not used since 2002 :-)

I second that nod.
They are the special, quiet, reflective, and giving folk.

Yup. I've been getting e-mails from another site that I joined at the request of the person who started it, but I really don't have the time to actively participate on that many forums. For photography it is DPC and Flickr. I just got an e-mail yesterday saying my account was being deactivated due to inactivity.

I think Langdon has done that for some people within the past year or so. Send him an Administrative Inquiry (Help / Contact Us /Administrative Inquiry) and you may be in luck.

I say we kill them all for not paying the membership fee!

I know that I lurked on this site for two years, voting in challenges, but never entering challenges, or even posting in the forums. Then, two years ago I joined, and started entering challenges. At first, I didnt enter challenges because I was intimidated by how good the photography was/is on this site.

But, just recently have I started becoming more active in the forums. I guess it just takes time for some people to start entering challenges, and posting.

Yes, I could enter Free Study I suppose. But, to be honest, I'm not really a competitive person. It's not in my nature. And I know some who enter are similarly not competitive and enter simply for the feedback, but I find there are other avenues that work better for me on that front.

Also, I'm such a slacker with processing that the odds of me processing an image within a week of taking it are, frankly, almost non-existent! GRIN!

Maybe I AM a zombie! GRIN!
