Everybody has different things they look for in voting on a photo. What do you look for?

I comment on each image I vote on. This is what I start with:
Technical: fit the challenge. Exposure composition focus lighting
Personal:
My vote:
I then add "Does" or "doesn't" (or something to that effect) to "fit the challenge", along with comments on why I might feel that way. I add comments regarding the other technical aspects, and then comment on any personal effect or interest. Based on a combination of these factors I come up with a score. I only give 1's to images that are really poorly shot, disregard challenge rules, have nothing to do with the theme, or any combination of these. 5's are for images that are really average to me. I've only given I think 4 10's, they were in the Simplicity challenge- they were images that to me were technically excellent, fit the challenge perfectly, and had some sort of emotional impact on me. 2-4 is given for images that need varying amounts of work, 6-9 for images that are very good to great.
This is why I don't vote on every image. Too much work! :-)

I generally only vote on those photos that "speak" to me. What speaks to me is something that is to my eye very artistic, technically a challenge, or just downright beautiful. What does not speak to me are things that I consider mundane. Sometimes, challenge winners look mundane to me, but I'm realizing that "mundanity" (like that word? I made it up myself, LOL) is in the eye of the beholder as is beauty. Things that I consider mundane are sometimes things that I see everyday - and perhaps I just take them too much for granted to see the beauty in them, but there it is.
At any rate, the pictures I rate are rarely rated below 3, and if I score that low, there are usually technical aspects that I *personally* found distracting and I try to comment on any shot that I think could have been improved. I appreciate comments in kind on my own work (some of which I also find to be mundane, hehehe - but I'm trying to get better). I do tend to award lots of 6-8's and a very few 9/10's. |

I always vote 100%. That's the only way that I feel is fair to everyone.
I comment on as many as my time allows.
I rate very highly, photos that have strong emotional or visual appeal to me.
I rate moderately, photos that have some appeal, but for one reason or another don't have the impact that I am looking for.
I rate very low, the photos that don't meet the challenge AT ALL, are so tiny that it's difficult to see them, or that I find offensive in some way.
Though I occasionally give 1,2, or 3, my usual voting range is 4 - 10, and I've had as many as 4 or 5 10's in a challenge. I DO NOT rate photos "against" one another; I rate each on it's own merits, (or lack thereof).

I personnaly get the first impression int the first 1 or 2 seconds that I see a picture... Then I upgrade or downgrade considering technical points... I check the light, the focus, the colours, the details. I sometimes rate a picture lower for it's lack of originality even if the result is spectacular (example: water drops on a glass...)

Technical aspects first:
Does it fit the challenge?
Is it in focus?
Does it have artifacting?
Composition?
Use of color?
Tonal range?
use of subject?
Does it have that special touch. A photo can be technically correct, but still can lack appeal... ;D

What I look for is exhileration, something that stimulates awareness, preaches dissociation or kindles resentment against evil. |

Wow, you'd be hard pressed to find those things in some challenges :-)

Well, that's an ideal. I do admit, I make a hell of an effort to remember my ideals sometimes though. ;-) |

With an average vote cast of 3.5035 over 4,169 votes apparently you don't find those things in very many challenges at all...

Fit to challenge.
Appeal.
Originality.
Technical quality.
In that order of importance/weight. |

Taking the photo: I am looking for a moment beginning to unfold. Trying to see into the future, and anticipating a scenario ... a look, a glance, a smile, someone walking into a scene at just the right moment...etc.
Looking at a photo: I am looking for "wow", something that strikes me as unusual or memorable. Besides technical stuff, of course.

I've submitted 30 times, and I my entries get shredded regularly. Not only that, my worst submissions get promoted. ;-) |
