Hello,

I made some home vids over the last 10 years. I have since put them on DVD to watch in DVD player. Now I'd like to edit some of them. I can't find a program that will take the VOB file and convert it to something I can use in Premiere. I thought that Virtual Dub would but I was wrong.

Anyone know of any software?

Thanks,

I used Mac the Ripper to rip them, then Handbrake to re-encode them as Mpeg

I've used AVS Media to convert stuff in the past .... I think you have to pay for it though, they have several different bits of software for $59

You might find some good info in this very comprehensive cover story from Maximum PC Magazine.

It's from about 1 1/2 years back, so the details may not be 100% current. Still good info, however.

There is also a link on that page to their ultimate DVD ripping guide.

BTW, Maximum PC makes all their back issues available for free download once they are no longer on the newsstands. An excellent resource.

It creates two folders, one labeled AUDIO_TS and the other VIDEO_TS each contains the uncompresssed, unencrypted source files for the video or audio. (The audio is usually empty unless there's a music file on the DVD). Think of it as a RAW movie file. The ripper can see it, but you can't play it back or really edit it until it's been re-compressed and re-encoded, which is what Handbrake does.

You can omit the mac the ripper step if it is a homemade dvd since that program demacrovisions (verb?) them. Handbrake will work alone, and I'd recommend h.264 as it looks like it will be around for a while.
