I also voted low because of the blue skirt... Simplicity for me means no artifice, no "special effect"...

I noticed your post and had to chime in. I am from Northern Indiana, too, and recently tried to take a picture of some Amish near where I live. I knew they didn't like having their picture taken but I was trying to be sneaky. When I did it, a bystander scolded me and said I was being insensitive and I guess I was (I was shooting their faces not their backs). Darn, they make such interesting subjects.

Anyway, I didn't vote in this challenge but I would have given you a 6. I think the way you interpreted the challenge was fine. It's hard to understand why a decent photo gets a 1 or 2 but it happens to all of us.

I live not too far from Lancaster where there is a huge Amish community and let me tell you it is not an easy thing to photograph them and then when you do it is always from behind. I try not to take pictures of their faces even when I do have the rare opportunity because they really don't like it at all.

Exactly. I was going to reply that I didn't want to try to get any closer for fear of being beat with a buggy whip. :-) Honestly, that wouldn't happen, but I was trying to be respectful of them.

The Amish are really interesting subjects, especially how they live such a simple life in our sometimes overly complex society. It's really amazing to think about the things that we take for granted as necessity in life that the Amish see no need for.

Ten13 - I'm not upset about the 1's and 2's, I'm just curious as to the reasoning behind them. People are entitled to their opinions and interpretations and I can respect that.
