I was taking photos of my son and the kitty and suddenly it started clicking like it was possessed. I turned it off and it continued to do it. I took the battery out, put it back in and it started back up again. It's not harming the memory card, thank goodness. I put in a different battery and it just continued to click and the screen shows ERR 99. Anybody have a clue what is going on???

My big wild guess would be that your button is stuck down. Or a short is making it have constant contact. Probably time for it to take a trip to a repair facility.

Sorry to hear about that. The exact same thing hapened to my 1D3 about a month after I got it. I sent it to Canon and they say they replaced the shutter mechanism, not sure if they did anything else though. It's been perfect since.

I think it is indeed possessed. And the only possible solution is to get a 40D, which is greatly reduced in price about now.

BTW you think your 20D sounded possessed? Try 10 fps!

If you are real short on funds.... get a vertical grip and use the button on it instead. Yeah - mine sticks sometimes now also but I have always managed to wiggle it around to get it back - The button sits lower then when new and it will fail like your at some point (I am moving to a used 5D in the next few months).....

Mine did the same thing. It was an easy fix... I bought a new camera.

Your shutter is toast... sorry!

Flick the shutter button a dozen times hard with your fingernail and if it persists, the shutter is probably whack.
Error 99 is a catch all, but from reading that same exact scenario over & over, it's most likely the shutter.
Sorry.

You can fix it though:

eeeeek!

The button doesn't seem to be pushed down I'm off to Precision Camera, a repair and diagnostics place. UGH - I can't afford a new camera right now.

WOW Judy that sux, I hope you can get it sorted without too much expense. Maybe some contact cleaner sprayed in the button hole and keep clicking it a few times.... It does sound like a kind of stuck contact pad to me.

I have that problem when I click the popup flash button. I never really use it since i bought a pair of 430ex's and a transmitter.
but i probably dropped my camera or something must have hit it and the popup sticks.

if i do resort to using it, i kind of put it up with my fingernail as i click the button.

if i manage to get it unstuck before the 3rd click, no error happens and it shoots as normal.

hope this helps.

I see it happen all too often.

I'm afraid a silver bullet is the only way. :(

Yep, the shutter is fried. UGH Not exactly what I wanted to hear the week after Christmas. If I send it to Canon, it'll be $253.00 but I think I'd rather put that money toward a newer one. Anybody selling cheap? LOL

What you want? I can let a 40D go for $650 paypal and shipping to conus. still under warranty as I bought it in may.

You can pickup another 20D for about the cost of the repair. Or get a 30D for 100 more, give or take.

Check your local craigslist for good deals, someone is selling an XTi for $300 in my neck of the woods, seems decent.

Check the buy & sell over at fredmiranda if there are no hits here.... I try not to look cause I will buy that MKII that is out there or one of the 5D's  Prof is right that another 20D would be in that range and maybe a 30D - not worth the fix now days.

Glad to hear, I love craigslist as long as you meet in person and pay in cash.
