Now I've moved across the pond, I need to familiarise myself with some Canadian stores. Can anyone recommend a good bricks & mortar store and a couple of good online retailers that I should try.

P.S. I'm skint at the moment so price sensitivity is quite important.

Sorry maybe my englishness, when I say bricks & mortar I mean an actual store I can go in, rather than just online only.

OK so found this one:
//www.londondrugs.com

What do you mean by superstore? Real Canadian Superstore? They have lenses and lighting? I'm looking for hardware mainly, not printing.

Although if someone could recommend a good online printer that would be great too!

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it would help to know.

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Leo's Camera, Vancouver, BC. Lousy website, great store, supplies the pros throughout the NorthWest, US and CDN.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Lens and Shutter. A decent chain.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ London Drugs Big drug store chain with camara/computer depts., from point and shoots to prosumer, limited selection of lenses. Will order anything.

Then there are the local camera shops like Kerrisdale Cameras, Black's and Broadway Camera in Vancouver...

Henry's is by far my favourite in Canada but you could also try these:

simonscameras.com (Montreal)

cameracanada.com

vistek.ca

Sorry, Waterloo, ON.

ah ! likely Henrys is your best bet local ...
lots of Blacks but don't expect the staff to be knowlageable .. more like a "fast food of camera shops"

But also check out photoprice.ca - they do price comparisons for Canadian shoppers. Don't ever, ever, just go to Henrys or Vistek & pay their asking price. I belive you can also save the PST if you shop from out of province, e.g. buy from one of the Alberta stores and you'll pay the GST but no PST. And always ask for price-matching if you go to a bricks & mortar store; they might insist on charging what you would have paid for shipping but it's usually worthwhile.

(Across the pond - Blighty?)

Camera Canada has a bricks and mortar store in London I believe so Henry's and Vistek will probably match their prices.

I've had good luck with Vistek and price matching.

The only way to avoid PST is to order from a store which does not do business in Ontario. The Camera Store in Calgary is pretty good.

The Camera Store is your best bet to avoid the PST (7% Discount right off the bat!)

Vistek

Henry's

All 3 sell both online and in brick & mortar stores.

What about online photo printing, anyone recommend anywhere? I need to get some 10x8's done.

People use many different places - personally I use Costco. You can download the exact ICC profile for the printer that'll be used for your shots, so if your monitor is calibrated you'll be able to see pretty much an exact colour match. They're cheap too, and I've never had any problems with the quality. If you're printing for a client though, you may want something more.

These three would be my recommended choices along with a fourth, Merkle Cameras in Toronto.

Personally I refuse to buy from Vistek, they are WAY overpriced here and Ive been in a couple of the stores here and well unless you are a well known pro photog here the service sucks to say the least...

I solely use The Camera Store here as their prices are under pretty much anyone and have allways gotten excellent service and advice from their staff over the past 2 years I have been shopping there...

I have recently had good dealings with McBain Cameras as well but they are mostly central and northern Alberta...

Although London Drugs has decent service and staff I find their prices a little on the high side...

BE CAREFUL who you send your photos to for online printing, Black's has a clause in there the last time I looked that I read as once you upload the photo they can reprint for their own promotion with no recognition or compensation to the original photographer...

Im not sure if London Drugs online ordering is the same but Ive walked my files in to a number of places in town and the only place I will use is London Drugs, they are the only ones that dont mess with the colours on the photos, almost everyone else did and pretty much ruined the photos... costco, Black's, WalMart, Super Store they all messed with the photos and the differences were night and day compared to LD...

Thanks, that's what I want, somewhere that won't mess with high key/white backgrounds, some machines compensate for it and print darker.

I'm surprised that an online place would try and use your images, they must be pretty brazen to put that in their T's & C's...

Yea I know, pretty ballsy. I never liked Black's to begin with but that clause in their T&C's is BS in my opinion and will NEVER buy anything from them just like Vistek. I wont send anything to an online service without fully reading their T&C's. Its too easy for them to make you agree to anything they want and the worst part is most people won't read that and just blindly click the "ok" box. Its a little harder for them to pull that off if you walk in but Im sure Black's somehow has that covered as well.
