I was just wondering if anyone has opinions on battery grips for the XSI... On ebay there are several variations of generic brands that are much cheaper. My practical side says "you get what you pay for" while my frugal side says "you just spent a ton of money on lenses etc, don't break the bank and get the cheap one"
Does anyone have a generic brand battery grip? Opinions? Thanks!

here would be an example of the cheap generic one.

gotta get one, I just got a 24-105 L, so I can't risk a drop!

I've been using the Opteka vertical/battery grip ever since I bought my 40D (Sept 2007). Their info states that they have access to the same molds & dies that Canon uses. That's why the fit is so snug and rather seamless.
To me, it makes the camera easier to carry. I also get around 2500-3000 shots between battery charges, which is really nice. I don't even think about charging any more, as I always have two more spares with me. Each pair lasts me about a month or more. The batteries that came with the grip were the Opteka 2000mAh lithium-ions.
As an added advantage, I can also rest the side of my left hand/palm against the grip when using my long 300mm lens, for steadiness.
When turned to portrait orientation, the extra dial and shutter button work well and feel very close to the same as the main dial and button. Since I mostly shoot in manual mode (95% of the time), having these controls when in vertical orientation is priceless.

I think I'm gonna give that one a try, I've found it for $75 new on the web, and my local camera store has the Canon version for $220...
I'm all about the savings if it'll get the job done! |

Being the snob that I am, when I got my 450D I wanted a grip and extra battery. I tried 2 other brands but went for the Canon one and I got a 3rd party extra battery, but now I find myself using the AA battery adapter a lot more than the main batteries as they last HEAPS longer (I have 6x 2700 AA's).
I would say, IF your budget allows, get the real one and a good strong set of AA's

| Can't speak to generic vx OEM, but I LOVE the nikon grip I got--more capacity, better gripping in portrait/vertical, and the AA pack. I may try that AA 6x2700 trick--but I do like rechargeable over throw away... |
