Merry Christmas everyone.

As I'm still fairly new to the sucking scene, could someone please explain what qualifies one for an OOBie and Yappie. I think it's the out-of-the-box entry and the one who makes lots of/good comments?

Yep. Somewhere there exists an OObie and Yappie thread, I think. As Raish noted, though, it seems to be a bit overcome by the Posthumous ribbons thread. Anyone, not just TS'ers, can nominate OObies and Yappies. The honor of picking the OObie goes to the team that scored the highest that week - which is the only time teams or scores really matter here at Team Suck (other than the penance of commenting when you suffer from a momentary lack of suckiness and have the highest score of all Suckers in a challenge.)

Perhaps a change in the earth's tilt is due. We shall await further guidance from our Fearless Leader.

OOBIEs and YAPPIEs died out, to be honest - not a whole lot of participation nominating-wise, and voting-wise, and then, sadly, even congratulating the winners died off (how fun is it to have a congratulations thread where only 1 or 2 people post, despite announcing the location of the thread in several places?)

Writing this hurriedly - the above was not meant to criticize Team Suck - just these were all the reasons why I let the whole thing go quiet or as Don said once, I think, "die a natural death".

I would love to revive the Oobies/Yappies, but I need participation from you all. So if you are up for it, I'm up for it, just give me the green light.

Fear of ambiguity is such that Wikipedia is liberally sprinkled with disambiguation.
As one of the most attractive elements of pictures may be the need to look harder to establish what it is one is looking at, or even to ascertain that the exact nature or intention of the picture or its content cannot be established, or that it is ambiguous, and as the OObie is essentially about demonstrating some form of ambiguity in the interpretation of the given challenge, then disambiguation is precisely what we wish to avoid. I suggest that the OObie be reinstated as antidisambiguation ribbons in the Posthumous Ribbons thread.

But I'd better not volunteer for anything, as I'll never carry through.

you can't say that and not at least provide us with a graphic that would be the "anti-disambiguation" ribbon :P

Nice, I second the motion.

I think Yappies should make a reappearance. I think it was a nice way to give back to the community.
While OOBIEs are terrific, I think too many people just equate them to the posthumous thread, even though they are not quite the same.

Maybe we can start the new year with a bang.

Cheers all.

To be going on with?

Pictures and a few words about German Christmas markets can be found here.

Going to bed now so Santa can come. Of course, I suspect Santa has delegated to USPS and they don't deliver tomorrow. Sigh. Still, I get to sleep in! :-)

I saw my cousin Darrell over Christmas. He's the one who recently got married. I took some pictures while I was there, but just for fun and my own practice (they hired a photographer). I had taken what shots I had done and had about 150 keepers that I made into a dvd slideshow with music and had printed, matted and framed this and gave it to them as a gift. Anyway, to make a long story short, they hated everything the other photographer did and loved all the shots on the dvd. So they asked if they could have the shots to make their own prints with. So I guess I'm not such a bad photographer after all. On the not plus side, I now have two people that want me to shoot their weddings and I really don't want to do it. Too much pressure for me.

That is excellent, Kelli! Congrats!!! And as for doing other weddings, is there someone else you can take with you to shoot as well so you aren't so worried about it?

Funny that.....

I have the same issue.....don't even want to entertain the idea of being that photographer that's now in the dog house 'cause they hated all his shots.

I have noticed that there seems to be some attitude that goes along with wedding photography, and that's what I hear the most about complaint-wise.....all that 'tude, and the shots sometimes don't turn out as envisioned.

I've been trying to get someone to take me on as second camera........the shots I like to do are candid portrait work, and the ones that while they cannot be faked, there's also no guarantee that they'll happen.

I'd prefer to have the expectations low and exceed them greatly than have them high and fail miserably. Not that I'm a coward or anything.......8>)

I have not gone to an event in the last year and a half or so that I have not gotten at least 2-6 REALLY good candid portraits/captured moments, but they also have not necessarily defined the event, either.

DO charge them something for the image files.....after all, you did take time to edit and process them.

But you don't have to charge them the sun & sky, either, especially if they are friends.

How I've been handling the requests to date is on a satisfaction guarantee basis, you no likee, you no payee.

I'd rather lose the time than the friends, and it's still education and experience, no matter how it turns out.

The only other person I know who actually takes pictures is my cousin Melissa (the one I gave the rebel to). While she's learning loads, she wouldn't be capable of doing something like that. She's so cute to watch though. I've taken her out to shoot a few times now and she's really loving it. I think what I might offer to do is have them hire someone else, but come and do my own take on it as a gift (kind of like what I did here). Both people that asked are relatives of relatives, so I know them fairly well. I think they'd understand that I don't want to be responsible for maybe messing up their big day.

I think that's a good idea - and it's a great gift for you to give, too.

I've been meaning to ask if Melissa was enjoying the camera - glad to hear she is! You should let her have a folder in your portfolio - nothing for challenges, but just someplace you could stick a few of the shots she's proud of to share with a few of us.

Deb, here's a couple that she's sent me...

She's very self conscience, and I'll let her know I posted them, but she wouldn't take criticism very well. I'll post some now and again. She doesn't show most of her pictures to anyone so I'm quite thrilled when she's happy enough to send me any. I think these are quite good.

Edit to add: She does any editing in Picasa.
