My scores have definitely seen a tiny bump. I fairly consistently hit 5+ (something that I always thought was a big accomplishment for me).

Oh and here's a partial comment on one of my images in voting... "the image is a bit confused". This totally cracked me up!

I think it means: 'Could you print this on soft paper, I've got shit for brains'.

But 'tis the season and I should not be mean.

ROFL! He's not a native English speaker. And, I'm sure he meant it in the nicest possible way (he really is a nice person).

It could indeed be that the image is a bit confused. You'll have to ask it. :-)

Rosemary, fret not scores. Mine have dropped since last year, too, and that's even when I TRY! :-) I'm going to come up with some goals for next year, one of which is to only enter challenges when I have a shot I'm happy with. Didn't always do that this past year. If I'm happy with the shot, and it wasn't one I TRIED to satisfy voters with, then I don't mind the score nearly as much. Still bums me out from time to time that I don't seem to get any better, but I really do still enjoy photography, so it hasn't truly deterred me.

Happy Holidays,
I've been very lacking in the photography part of my artsy-fartsy endeavors. I haven't done a New Years Resolution in years ... but I think picking up the camera and working it will be the one for this coming year.
I do have camera news (of a sort) ... I had my directorial debut yesterday. I directed a 3-hour live (local) tv show. And it went very well.
Shhhhh...don't tell my husband but he's getting a Canon Digital Rebel XSI for the holidays.
Please everyone, have a happy, safe, peaceful, family-friendly holiday season. And the best wishes for 2009.
Jeanne

Very cool on the director thing, Jeanne! And also very cool that your hubby is getting a camera. It's nice to have a shooting partner, and even nicer when you don't have to leave home to find one!

Woohoo. I just got a volunteer job at www.youthinfocus.org. I am so excited.

Need to catch up on the wonderful photos everyone has been taking and the terrific comments.

Cheers, hope you are all enjoying the winding down of the year.

I think that, if you let it, this place has the ability to be a positive influence on the person behind the camera instead of the nuts and bolts of the craft itself.

For whatever reason, I went through the images listed on the pages of the equipment I have......almost without exception, I have an image on every page of the equipment that I own. I didn't even know how to work my camera when I got here. ALL of them have been since being on TS, and the better ones since I've taken the whole spirit of this place to heart.

I rarely get upset even in the slightest with a score because that is EXACTLY what I learned here......ONLY submit an image when I am happy with it as it's entered. That way there score really doesn't mater.

I have two images in voting right now, both doing better than they should be IMO, the first because its technicals are actually showing through over the pleasing factor, the second 'cause it's kinda title driven and funny. That second one I entered because it amuses ME, and score be damned.

Anyway, if you gauge your work by what pleases you, and not the masses, you're always going to be happier in the long run.

I got quite a few 6+ scores with my "Monetism" experiment....which is theoretically a good thing, but truth be told, *I* don't like them as much.....so to a certain extent, I feel like I cheated 'cause a couple of them were done strictly to score well, knowing full well that the voters would like them.

I'd much rather do well for a terrific, compelling image than whore for score.

Anyway, I'm more comfortable and confidant, ergo happier, since adopting the Melethia attitude......."I really LOVE my shot."

I also have been using my average as a bar.....I've entered 126 challenges, and if my image in voting is at, or above my average, how can I squawk?

And if I tank an entry, so be it, it's not going to affect my average but the very slightest. I started at TS with something like a low to mid-4, and am now at a 5.4.

All it takes is patience & time.....and faith in your support.

Merry Christmas & Thanks!

I own nothing on any of my camera or lens pages (other than my P&S), so that's pretty impressive Jeb! But does this mean I'm not improving? :-(

(Just kidding.)

Death is always tough to face, esp when you knew them well in life. Look at the memorial page you're going to do for him as a way of being cathartic, for you, and helping bring closure to your classmates. (HUGS) Stay strong, kiddo!

Katherine, I'm so very sorry you are going through this trauma, especially at this time of the year. We helped our son through the loss of his best friend (at age 15), if you need to chat, please feel free to PM me.
I'm so sorry.

At 13, I watched my best friend wither up and die from leukemia......something fairly easily dealt with today.

It's not easy; it ain't fair.

Hang in there......most of us have been there at one point.

PM away if you need to do so.

Hey Suckmates - we've been slipping a bit lately on OObies and Yappies. And probably I haven't been paying attention... that's always a possibility. Did we award a Yappie for K10DGuy for his small novellas on FS entries? And when was the last time we had an OObie?
12/24/2008 05:25:20 AM · #870
It's as though OObies have played their part - a rôle now usurped by Posthumous Ribbons of the Week.

Here are suggestions for the market relaunch:

*inclusion of nominees and winners in the Posthumous Ribbons of the Week thread.

*an entry entitled 'Presentation of the OObie to X' in each of the challenges running in the following week.

*?

K10DGuy should definitely have a narration yappie.

As a recipient of TWO K10DGuy novellas, I'll definitely third the nomination for a Narrative Yappie.

On the OOBies, I'd support the resurrection.......as long as someone else does the labor.....(There, I even said that out loud!)

So....since I screwed up and got the Momentray Lapse thingie.....does that mean I should comment on the entire week's worth of entries, or just that challenge?
12/24/2008 08:04:46 AM · #874
Definitely your challenge but nice if you do both. :)
