Cracks me up, LOL. Is the "Stars" blue ribbon absolutely the ugliest thumb you've ever seen? (On a ribbon-winner I mean)
Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted this excellent example of astrophotography won the blue, it speaks well of the voters. But sheesh, that thumb...

What I find amusing is the location Pascal listed in the photo (i.e. Kariani, Greece).

Oh and this is still the ugliest ribbon winning thumbnail. It's also the ugliest full size photo but that's for another thread. :P

Well, at least you can TELL what Timfy's picture is OF, sheesh. I mean, the star shot looks like a pixelated turd in the thumb. :-)

You are looking at it upside down, turn around and look again. I'll bet most of the votes came from men, just from the thumb :)

It proves a point made by many; don't vote on thumbnail images.
Don't cherry pick images based on thumbnails.
A good looking and very bad looking thumbnail will be opened when cherry picking but the average will just sit there saying "pick me!, Pick me!
Now that I have said that. The Picture is very good, I like it. I'm only speaking negatively of the thumbnail.
OK, now someone can bring out the horse and stick :)

But of course! :-)
And no dead horse beating here, just a light-hearted reaction to that appallingly "unattractive" thumb :-) That was one of my top scores for the challenge, after all.
But to go back to your point, I never even LOOK at the thumbs really, until after voting, 'cuz I just wade in and start scoring and advancing, scoring and advancing. Which is how it's supposed to be done of course. And is your point, of course. When I am adjusting scores I'll use the already-scored-and-sorted thumbs to find images I remember that I want to bump in the scoring, though.
I guess maybe this IS dead-horse-beating? Jejejeâ¢

But it is admittedly often not how it's done, so I think both of you have issued a valid reminder. |

I hope you did not misunderstand me Robert. I was not aiming my post at you because I feel you vote fairly and take voting seriously.. You been here a long time and respect the site. My statement was a general one, a statement for those that do look at the thumbnails then open based on looks of the 120x thumb. |

Hey! I cherry pick and I take voting seriously more than most. You assume everyone just cherry picks the ribbon winners and maybe most do since they are the most obvious given their usual simple arrangements and bright colors but not everyone does that. I don't. Besides, I'm rarely surprised by what the large version is when I click on the thumb. I should hope that Pascal's thumb was pretty obvious as to what it was especially given the challenge theme.
*tries to revive the dead horse*

No, not at all. I was just picking up on your theme. And, as the Generale remarked, issuing a timely reminder to the voting public, I guess :-)

so maybe we shouldn't be able to look at the thumbs until we have voted on all of them?

Ok this is getting a little ridiculous. Where is the evidence that thumbnail voting is a problem? Every time this comes up nobody actually provides any evidence on the matter, they just assume it's bad and that it's having a negative impact. I swear if this site decides to take action to fix this phantom problem while ignoring the real problems that plague this site the only thing you will accomplish is to drive more people away. For me voting has already gotten to the point where it is almost unbearable. It's become like those tortured devices where you're forced to see the same image over and over until you go crazy. Having the thumbnails at least gives you the ability to seek out new imagery to spend your time on. Don't take that away.
