Just a poll to know how many people find each and every comments they receive "helpful". I was looking at the comments i've made and checked those people who found my comments helpful and discovered that every comment they receive seem to be helpful. In my mind if we give helpful to anyone who comments on your photo there's no meaning to have this qualification anymore.

Maybe ....

But it is balanced out by all the people who never bother to tick the helpful box regardless of what comment is made.

At least if it is ticked you know the person bothered to read it.

Ideal world I agree with you, but realistically here people are going to tick, or not tick, regardless, and it certainly doesn't do any harm having the option.

I do appreciate knowing someone liked a photo, so why not acknowledge it! If they say something critical, that too is a good thing.

As long as the person has shown that they had a good reason to enter a comment, even if they just say that they liked the photo, I acknowledge it. I don't acknowlege troll comments (these are easy to identify), or if someone just tells me what they scored it (I had one recent comment which was just a number!)

Well, if some one spends the time to rate my photo, I will more then likely click helpful. Unless its just nonsence, I will vote it helpful.

Even very simple remarks can be helpful.

I think that the term helpful means more to me than being defined in just photographic terms. For instance, I like to have my ego stroked [:)] to when I get comments that are just reactions that are positive then I check them as helpful. I have even checked comments that are negative as helpful bc sometimes they are.

I think it all depends on the person. I think comments that have to do with reaction are very helpful bc it means to me that people have enjoyed my work & it fuels the fervor to keep on taking more shots.

If it's a simple "cool", "neat", "wow" or something like that I won't mark it helpful. If you add something more then a single word I will usually mark it helpful.

Pretty close to making my 1000 comment sometime tonight and have over 750 helpfuls.

If someone notices something that I have strived for in one of my photographs or even if they have spotted something I hadnt then I tend to mark those as helpful as it means I've either accomplished something on purpose or accidental. This is even a matter of marking a comment such as 'cute' as helpful if that was the effect I was aiming for. If people leave a criticism about something I have done and it is beneficial for me to consider those changes then I would mark it as helpful. If someone tells me to change something to completely change what I am going for then those are usually not helpful even though I appreciate the time they took to comment.

As for the 'meaning' to the qualification, I dont think there is one. Some people mark everything, some people mark nothing, some people mark only the positive comments. Sometimes you can get greatly discouraged in leaving comments when you think no one is finding them useful (even more so when you get nasty PM's in response to them too!). You just have to ignore it, really.
