I have heard a lot about this lens. But the last time I checked, no one owned it here on DPC.

What are your experiences, if any, with this lens?

dpreview.com actually recommends this one above the Nikon 18-200mm VR, which is surprising. More so because I recently saw a not so credible test review from them with incomparable conditions.

Any input appreciated!

I read a recent (this month maybe) review in Pop Photo magazine of the canon 18-200 and the reviewer copared it to this tamron and lens and said lots of good things about the tamron.

Like any mega zoom there are compromises. You get overall range but usually give up optical quality at some point - barrel or pincushion distortion or softness at certain points, etc. But any lens today is so much better than those of 10 years ago it's not likely to be an issue unless 1) you pixel peep when the only real measure is a print or 2) you compare it to a better lens like an L or a prime.

Thank you.

I wont have looked its way if it wasnt for

(1) The super zoom range
(2) The vibration control, which apparently matched Nikon's if it doesnt exceed it

It is true that there will be compromises with such a long focal range. One more thing I read was that it doesnt focus as fast as the Nikon counterparts on the same body.

I think they said that about it compared to the canon as well. Canon's is USM.

I'm just sooo used to fast or one aperture lenses I don't think I'd be happy with a variable ap lens even if it was IS/VR/OS and was all in one. I do miss having an all in one walkaround though. Last one I had was the 28-135 canon and I liked it, but I wanted/needed/preferred an F4 or better/constant aperture lens.

I've considered one of these for walkaround or second shooter use. Still haven't ruled it out.
