I got an "old" (refurbed) Nikon L2 at Sammy's Camera for $50 for the kiddos I live with (5 & 6 years old). I'm not sure about durability, and there are a lot of controls they don't need, but for just pointing and shooting, it'll do the trick. They're very careful with things they know are fragile.

I'm in the same boat. My son, soon to be 8, is getting an old computer right after xmas and has wanted a camera for years. I want something 'real' as opposed to a mattel camera, but I'm with slippy that it has to be durable (just in case - kids are kids).
If does NOT use CF so much the better - he wont' be tempted to take my cards :P

I think most P&S cameras use SD cards...there may be exceptions though.

SD cards are getting so inexpensive that it's not really a burden to load up on those as well as CF cards. I got a 4GB SD card for $4 at Sammy's.

My grandson Luke is showing a lot of interest in taking photos these days, probably because I always have my camera out and stuck in his face a lot ! He has been using my Daughters p&s and seems to be able to handle it fine, he also loves to take photos with her camera phone and seems to have a decent eye for photography, he does not rush things and will spend time getting his shot right. I want to encourage him but realise that he is only 4 and did not want to spend a great deal of money. I came up with this - GE A735 Digital Camera -
GE A735

I cant wait until he is let loose with it over Christmas! I will post some of his efforts up here after Christmas.

Hey Slippy, I think BAMartin would share in my opinion that we're achin' to see some photos from and of the kiddos!

Absolutely! I am waiting not-so-patiently.

Heh. Well, one has already emptied a card's worth onto the computer, but the other hasn't let me yet, even after all her clicking. I think there'll be plenty of not-so-flattering shots of your's truly. I'll put some up here eventually. :-D They are both really enjoying them!

Less flattering than the phonebook embarassment? ;)
