I've let my kids borrow an old digital P&S camera a few times, and they really enjoyed it. The last time they were taking turns taking photos of each others' butts, and having a real gigglefest chimping. That piece of junk finally broke completely, but it was junk to start with anyway.

I'd like to get a digital P&S either for both to share, or one for each of them.
Sometihng that:
1. uses CF cards, so I can leverage from the many I already have for my Canons,
2. is reasonably sturdy, and able to survive as well as their Gameboys have (they are both very good at being careful with fragile stuff, though),
3. has an automatic lens cover when powered down (preference, not necessity, mostly to protect from greasy fingers during transport),
4. doesn't look like a Barbie toy, my girls are way too cool for that,
5. not more than 5 megapixels, so they don't hog up all of my storage space the way they do my ice cream,
6. reasonably quick shutter response,
7. decent quality photos,
8. internal flash which can be disabled, say, by using a P-Mode equivalent,
9. a good-sized (~2.5") and good quality LCD screen for chimping purposes,
10. Less than $100.

Any help?

My Kids have a Kodak DC280. It works great for them. My kids range in ages from 12 to 1. It meets all of your requirements except maybe the price. I haven't check ebay though. Here is a review of the camera.

the CF card need may have to go, very few of the less expensive P&Ss use them, I had to bite the bullet and admit that I wasn't going to be able to pawn off any of my old cards on my daughter when I bought her a camera.

I have an old Powershot S110 that my older son, age seven, uses. It's 2.1 MP and makes reasonably good photos. The battery life is crap though. You might look on eBay for one.

I could get a cheaper, new one for my 7 year old, and give my Canon A95 to my 10 year old. But I still use the A95 and love it dearly.... :-(

Slippy, you'd be surprised how well kids will take care of something that is important to them. My son received a p&s Nikon for xmas from Louis 2 years ago. He treats it like gold, it still looks brand new. And it's constantly in use. Though he prefers "making movies" with it over picture taking. If I were you I'd get them something decent that will last a number of years.

This one doesn't meet your expectations terribly well, but it's free!
I'll donate my relic from the past, this HP if you want it. I'm pretty sure this is the model, though I'd have to find it in the packed away stuff to verify and also to see what exactly I have for it. You'd need some rechargeable AA's for it.

Hey, wow, what a generous offer! :-)

I looked up the specs and some reviews and talked it over with the wife. We think it would be great, and would love to have it. How can I get some $$ to you for shipping?

I have a Fugifilm A330 that I never use. It takes AA batteries, but does not use a CF card. I would be happy to donate it to the cause as well.

Wow, thanks so much! I wasn't expecting this, but sure do appreciate it! I know my girls will be ecstatic to each have their own camera, now we can be an entire nuclear family of shutterbugs. :-)

Sending P.M.

Big thanks to spiritualspatula and BAMartin !!!

I never expected to have a couple of cameras sent for my daughters. It's a really great surprise, and I know my girls will be thrilled to have cameras they can call their own.

Thanks !!!

Its all about helping where and when we can. I have never forgotten the kindness of DPC when I needed to fly to NY to be by my daughters side when she was in an accident. This is a small payback on my part. Your daughters deserve to have cameras of their own, I hope it grows into a lifelong passion for photography!

DPC never fails to impress me, I love this community. I hope to someday be in a position to contribute more. Once school is out for the semester I think I'm going to hold a comment rally.

With people being so nice to me, I might have to stop being so obnoxious all of the time....

The pleasure was all mine. If somebody can get some use out of something that is just sitting around my house, it's great. All the better if it's a kiddo and they develop an interest as a result, and if they don't, then at least it's an amusing thing for awhile.

Goes to show how us westerly folk are ;)

Too late now, but I just picked up a cheap-o Samsung from The Confusion Shop for $69 for my rugrat. Our S3 IS is a bit un-ergonomical for his paws, and I was always a little nervous he'd give it a toss when started to get frustrated with the zoom button. The Samsung is a decent little snap-shotter, and even fits in his Little Boy Blue(jeans) pocket.

Doesn't meet your requirement, Slipmeister, since it uses SD, but maybe someone else has an ankle-biter that needs a camera.

showing $89 now, which is to be expected since it is 3 weeks later -- wish i'd seen it 3 weeks ago.

i found a little "pre-school" type (one that can be dropped, etc) for my 3 (almost 4) yo at a really good price, and am scouring to find one for my 6 (almost 7) yo. He's a bit more careful, so doesn't need a "toy" but something to fit chubby little hands is a good idea.

Anymore suggestions? Cheap is an imperative!

eta -- cheap as in inexpensive, not cheap as in piece o' crap! :)

Costco has the Olympus Stylus 1030SW for about $315 -- shockproof to 6+ feet, waterproof to 30+ feet, freezeproof ... there may be similar less expensive models available elsewhere -- I just remember seeing this one in the store.
