Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Compact Flash card readers that use a SATA interface (eg. Addonics SATA CF Adapter).
I'm looking for a fast CF reader, so the main options seem to be something like the Addonics (with the risk of hardware incompatabilities), or the Lexar Pro Firewire 800.
Lexar seems to be less risk for compatability, but Addonics seems to offer a faster transfer speed...
Any thoughts?
Thanks |

Addonics tested against other readers here.
"in our testing of two Addonics ADSACF readers, card compatibility was in short supply: some cards failed to be recognized by the operating system, some would incorrectly report as being unformatted (the same cards would show as being properly formatted in both the camera and another reader) while others would send Vista into a tailspin until the card was removed from the reader.
We've included results from the few cards we were able to successfully test in this reader. The vast majority of the rest, which are marked as --Error-- in the table below, exhibited one of the problems described above. Even if a card was able to complete the benchmarking routine, however, the overall flakey behaviour of this reader means we can't say with confidence that it will also work just fine in day-to-day use. I have a thread about this, I'll have to go searching... there we are
I bought the addonics SATA CF adapter and use it as my main reader now. I've never been able to get a USB card reader to transfer fast - no idea why. Anyway, the addonics is fast. I transfer images to my hard drive at 16 MB/sec, as compared to a typical 0.6MB/sec from a USB reader.
Note, however, that I did have to buy a hot-swap capable SATA PCI card, because my motherboard didn't support SATA hot-swapping - which is essentially what the SATA CF card does.

Ah, as for stability - my 4gb Lexar Professional UDMA x133 cards work perfectly, so that's really all I care about. I have some off-brand cards that do not work so well in it.
If you're not sure if your motherboard will support hot-swap, and you're not sure about your CF cards working in it, I'd probably steer clear. |

| One last thing - with the SATA interface you can bet that the limiting factor is the CF card and not the interface. I'm guessing the newer, expensive 300x cards would really fly. |

Wow--fantastic info. Thanks.
Sounds like Addonics seems very poor on flash card compatability.
Pity about that. Otherwise I'd give it a try as my motherboard has has ICH9R and I can enable AHCI for hot swap capability...
Looks like I'll go the Lexar FW800 route (The Sandisk FW800 reader seems to need external power when used with PCMCIA FW card interfaces).
I wonder why the benchmark at //www.robgalbraith.com that scalvert posted did not review the Lexar FW800... |
