New computer. Cannot access external hard drive - firewire. Works perfectly on XP machine. When I connect to the new Vista machine I get the beep letting me know that the system recognizes hardware being turned on. Device manager shows it as a hard drive. Disk management shows absolutely nothing. After a few minutes I get the beep that lets you know that hardware has been disconnected and the drive isn't found in the device manager (I didn't unplug or turn off the disk).
Been on Google for an hour. Any ideas before I set the thing on fire? |

I think it's a Western Digital. It's in an enclosure. Would it matter what brand it is?

Just hooked it up via USB and it worked fine. Firewire port works with camcorder so I know that's not it. Crazy.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed. Go to the website and see if you can download new drivers.

Its likely a driver issue. And you will also likely need to know the model number to get the correct driver.

But it's working fine via USB. Still could be a driver issue?

USB and firewire use a different driver. I have an external that would not work via firewire but works perfectly through USB.
