As of this morning, I noticed that DPC has 816 paid members, with 11,142 registered users (6.82% paid members).
[soapbox]
Now speaking only for myself, I can definitely say that my photography has improved more in my 18 months here than in many years previously. Best $25/year I've ever spent, by a long shot. That improviement could not have happened without the interaction with the many exceptional phtographers here at DPC, nor without the weekly challenges that encouraged the development of skills in photographic areas outside my "comfort zone".
I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage those in the "registered user" portion of our community to consider joining as members. Support DPC, it will pay back many times over. The more folks that join DPC as paying members, the more incentive there will be for web site improvements, directly benefitting the users.
If you're very new here, set a reminder for yourself 3 months out to consider the value of DPC to you and decide on membership at that point. If you've been here for 3-6 months as a registered user, please consider joining at this time if you feel you are getting value out of participating at DPC.
[/soapbox]
I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank all of those who have worked so hard to make this community so successful, including Drew & Langdon, the site council, and all of those very active members who have made this site what it is.
This is a wonderful community and I hope that it grows much stronger in 2004. Happy holidays to all, and a prosperous New Year.

I hear you! I am going to pay at the first of the year and become a member. I really enjoy this site and find myself hooked when I enter a challenge. I will spend the money. I love this site! |

I just registered as a member a couple of days ago. They've put so much work into this site and it has provided me with so much new information and enjoyment that it's totally worth it!
Thank you DPC! |

No, No, don't register. I like having the feeling that my picture will finish in the top 100 when I enter a memeber challenge.
All kidding aside, there are quite a few benefits. Having the space for your pictures and being able to link to them in the forums is quite popular w/ the memebers, being able to order prints and having a chance of having someone else buy them, and being able to enter more challenges. Register, you'll be more involved ;)

I became a member within my first week of registering - it was obvious to me that this site was going to benefit me as a beginner photographer looking to learn and advance. Not even two months later I already feel I've come so far and learned so much. Easily $25 well spent, and I've got ten months to go!
But I'm interested to know where all the money goes. $20,000 a year is no small chunk of change. I'm not all that farmiliar with what the costs of running and maintaining a site like this are. It would be great if members could see a breakdown of how their fees are spent to give us a better sense of what we're investing in.

Couldn't agree more. A small cost to pay and a lot to gain for. It's a great community of photographers to learn from. And the site itself has a lot to offer.

I didn't realize this was a charity web site? |

Think of the bandwidth and storage space a site like this and dpcprints needs. I'm sure the bandwidth adds up really quickly, and it isn't cheap. Also, since members have to pay, you have to have the site on a reliable server, which also costs money. This isn't just something someone is running out of their basement (I'm assuming), and I know its not a site you can put on a $9.95 a month server. I would bet that the profit margin on this site is quite slim. Thats why people should register.

I personally don't care where the money goes. I'm happy to pay and get my money's worth. DPC has been a great for me since 2/02. |

DPC is the most fun I've had with my computer and my camera.
OK, well there was that incident a couple years ago, but I erased all the evidence, deleted the files, wiped it all out.....

Actually, that's not all that bad, considering the echelons of people who come once, sign up, and leave. Or just stop submitting because people don't think their pets are cute. |

As to where all the money goes, I personally hope that a pretty decent chunk of it goes straight into Drew and Langdon's pocket. I love to see capitalists capitalize on a great product like this one.

After reading this post and few others ranting about registered users, I feel bad feeling poor!
Maybe one of the greater things about DPC is that all people can use it even those who dont have $25. Just a thought!
Besides, the other threads have revealed that the site gets a lot of help in running it and no one is really losing money just because there are more registered users than members. You guys have extra perks, can;t you be happy about that rather than ragging on those who don't?

Where is this ragging on registered users by members happening? I am not seeing it, or just too dense to figure out that encouraging someone to join as a member is putting them down or something. It is an encouragement, a recomendation, a thought, or request that I have read here.

Shouldn't the fact that the owners of the site have continuously maintained the same (high) level of service for non-paid registered members tell you all you need to know about the only opinions which actually count?
I think everyone's participation is valuable, except perhaps for sniping at other members. However, I don't believe that was at all the intent of the original post encouraging members to upgrade ... |

yup i noticed too that there are so many members here in dpc but only a few are regular member, i always wanted to pay my membership to support this site, but i got so many problems in the paying procedure, my friend is willing to pay for my account but until now he dont recieved the approval, i think he filed it more than two months now. when i subscribe in digitalphotocontest.com, in just a wink of an eyes, my membership and payment is accepted.
thanks a lot. |

Ok, register if you want to. There are over 100 entries in the current members challenge, so there goes my whole pitch about not registering..
